Do you get cheaper rates buying 1way or RT?

It depends on a lot of things, including airline, time of year, etc.

Legacy carriers like US Air, American, etc. will usually have a better fare on a r/t ticket. Low fare carriers like JetBlue, Southwest, etc. it normally doesn't matter as they sell only one way tickets.

My experience in at least the last two years with SW, NW, Airtran, US Air and Delta is that it makes no difference. There is a set price for each leg and I come up witht he same price whether booking roundtrip or one way. It is now my standard practice to book each way separately in the event I need to change one leg of the flight. I do this often for both buisness and pleasure trips. Sounds like others may have a different experience. It is easy enough to price it out both ways and see if there is a difference on the airline websites.

it's cheaper to book NWA there and Airtran back right now...I'm still waiting until I'm about 6 months out...[keeping fingers crossed].
I would check both ways to see.

It is the standard for RT tickets to be cheaper than one way, except for the non-legacy airlines, such as SWA, JetBlue, etc.

Price both ways when looking for tickets.
