Do you "exchange" with DVC?

I'm reading the book "Timeshare Vacations for Dummies" and was wondering if you would ever need to do exchanges with DVC. DH said no since you're working with points, but I'm not sure how it works. It's still confusing to me.

TIA!

Sasha,

I'm trying to figure out how much emphasis you intended on the word "need" above?

I'm guessing you are not currently a DVC owner and are asking how DVC works when booking reservations w/in the DVC resort group? If so, then your DH is correct - DVC owners do not use exchanges to book reservations w/in the family of DVC resorts (6 at WDW property, 1 at Vero Beach, 1 at Hilton Head). For DVC stays, we simply phone DVC Members Services and book our reservations for "any location, any size unit, any arrival date and any length of stay" w/in certain restrictions and subject to availability. The point cost of the transaction will be based on all the variables just listed. Assume that larger units cost more points than smaller ones; weekends cost more points than weekdays; holiday seasons cost more than off-season, etc.

DVC owners do use a form of exchange when booking stays using the "World Passport Collection." This collection is a hand-picked group of resorts available through Interval International (II). We request these exchanges directly through DVC's Member Services who then manages the transaction through II. In the end, we do trade "points" for "resort weeks outside the DVC group." Availability is subject to owners from these other resorts depositing their time in II.

There are additional ways to use our points for hotel stays, adventure vacations, cruises (etc) thanks to affiliations and reciprocal trade agreements Disney has made for our enjoyment. For the most part, DVC has tried to make it "easy" for the member by centralizing all of the "exchange" functions - be they week-long stays, nightly stays, cruises or safaris. ;)

Short version ... but I hope it helps.
