Do you ever visit the local Barnes and Noble Book Store

We don't have a Barnes and Noble nearby, but we visit out local Borders.

I never understood this either. I kind of don't like the idea of buying a book that who knows how many other people have already read while in the store. To me, that's buying a "used" book.

Kind of like buying a bathing suit? Before I buy the book, I take a look at it and make sure that it's in good shape. I don't think most people actually sit and read the big fiction books. You'll see a lot of people doing homework or other sort of paper work. I wouldn't have my kid do his summer reading there.

QUOTE]Originally posted by FOJMO I get the feeling that B&N doesn't actually encourage this -- that the chairs are there for you to maybe browse through a few books to see if they're what you're looking for, but if someone spends a few hours there reading an entire book, what are they going to say about it? Kind of like they tolerate it, but don't really encourage it. What would be the point of having books for sale?

Trust me, B&N gets plenty of money out of me in exchange for a chapter or so a week. A lot of times I'll start a book because I know the library has ordered it. They encourage people to hang out because they know the more time you spend there, the greater chance that you'll find some thing you just have to have... Plus, a lot of times I'll buy something there (because I spend a lot of time there) for the sake of convience even if it would be cheaper at another store. I like to look at travel books there because of the huge variety it's hard to figure out which is the one you need.

At least 1-2 times a week. I'm less than 2 miles from B&N and it's very convenient :)

As far as them discouraging the practice, most of the people that work there know me by name. No one has ever said anything to me about it and they make quite a bit of money on me. I would say at least $20/wk
