the amount of pets you have?

DH & I had 2 jack russells and recently he brought home a dog someone had abandoned. It is black lab mix that could easily have been named flea-bag! She had lots of little flea friends when we found her, but otherwise was in great shape!

We are in the process of adopting a baby, so really were not in need of another dog at this point! Well, to make long story (vent, actually) short, I had found a good home for the puppy but dh couldn't get rid of the puppy when the time came. So, we decided to keep the puppy.

Now, some of our family keeps criticizing us for the amount of dogs we have. I am not asking them to chip in for vet bills or anything! LOL! They just volunteer the fact that they think we are nuts. Today, my grandmother said she would get rid of the new dog. I wanted to say, well lucky for her that she found us not you! LOL!

It is not like I had much choice. I couldn't tell dh that he would have to choose between me or the new dog! What kind of person would I be then! I didn't wnat the dog, but she has grown on me and is turning in to be a great dog.

Thanks for listening! Sorrrrry for the VENT! Just curious if anyone else deals with this!

p.s. atleast when we do adopt, we have a co-pay for our medical insurance! LOL! Maybe we should invest on pet insurance!

Not criticized. I, for one, think it is great that you are unable to get rid of the new dog. I am always amazed by the number of people who can just get rid of a dog like it is an old shirt. We have two BIG dogs, a cat & 2 kids and I cannot imagine getting rid of any of them. They are all part of our family & I think it is good for kids to grow up with animals. Anyway, don't worry about what everyone else thinks (until you start hitting them up for vet bills:p !!).

I heard some of the same stuff when I was expecting my son. We had two cats and some people told me that we'd have to get rid of the cats. I told them that we would work it out and I wasn't getting rid of my cats.

As it turned out, the cats fled at first and then kept their distance after that. Both of them have since died but I couldn't imagine getting rid of two pets that we'd had for such a long time.

You know what is really neat about situations like this? The only opinions that count belong to you and your husband :) I love how that works, don't you?

As far as the grandmother is concerned, if she mentions the puppy again, just smile give her a great big {{{HUG}}} and tell her how sweet she is to worry about you, your dh and even your pets. Then change the subject.

Of course, this is only my opinion, so take it for what it's worth ;)

First off I just want to say best of luck with the adoption process. I know what you are going through with family and their feelings/advice about how many pets. But don't worry. Live your life and enjoy it. My family dealt with the same thing. My mother, bless her heart, could not turn away a stray animal if her life depended on it and it seemed that they all came to our house. I think at one time we had close to 20 dogs at once because she had to give them a home. She also adopted 4 children and we all somehow cohabited in crazy bliss. Our family thought us nuts and made every opportunity to comment or advice but we just nodded our heads and smiled and lived how we felt best. And it was a wonderful place to grow up. I am blessed to say I grew up surrounded by that kind of love. So enjoy your puppys and keep smiling.

carefreegal Sounds like your mother was a very special person :)

Our family loves animals. Everyone always says we have too many because we have 3 kids, but my husband and I always say our pets are like the icing on the cake. We have 1 old white fluff ball that resembles a dog that I inherited when my mother passed away 5 years ago, a 1 year old cocker spaniel mix that we got because we knew someone that had this one puppy left out of a litter that she was going to take to the pound, a cat that a friend had found when it was a baby in a garbage can, a turtle my kids found last summer in the creek behind our house, a parakeet we took from someone that was moving out of country and couldn't take, and some 25 cent goldfish from Walmart that have lasted a year. I wonder what we are missing?

Thanks guys for the positive feedback! :) It is soooo nice to have a good support system here! :)

Carefreegirl~ sounds like your parents are awesome!

Hey Lynette! Lots of people tell us we are crazy for having a large dog in the house. You get attached to the little fur babies and they are part of your family.

Good luck on the adoption process!!!!!! Let me know when you need a babysitter! ;)

Oh yeah... I have had 2 cats and 4 hampsters in an apartment that didn't allow pets.... that went over really well with the relatives! The landlords never knew, thank goodness!

Also, I had 4 cats at one time, but when my DD was born, 2 didn't like her, so we had to find other homes for them. We now have settled on 2 cats as being the perfect amount for us!
