For the first time, DH and I are both entering to win the house, every day. We are amusing ourselves with it, mostly. The house this year is one we would love to live in. Perfect for us. It's kind of like buying lottery tickets, I know.

Total ARV of Grand Prize is $2,089,400.00 if Grand Prize Winner takes title to the HGTV Dream Home or $1,377,000.00 if Grand Prize Winner selects the Cash Option in lieu.
I have been entering every day. This is one that we DON'T want to live in..too far away from our hometown (and family). We'd take the cash payout. Would be SOOOOOOOO nice! We could finish renovating our current house.
On this one we would take the cash. It's in California and I'm sure the taxes would kill you. If it was on the Nevada side then we might take the house.
The year it was Kiawah Island we entered like crazy. It's our dream retirement location. Unfortunately, it still is just a dream. But hey someone has to win. Good luck.
I've read (on the internet, so of course it's true!) that the people who have chosen to take the house instead of the money have all been badly burned in the deal. There's the income tax angle, of course, and then property taxes, fees for the homes built in gated communities, and utilities for a house that size. Plus, if you'll notice, the furnishings that come in the home leave a bit to be desired.
Go for it if you want to, of course! But I think I'd take the cash.
This house doesn't wow me - which I am surprised at - love Lake Tahoe, love log cabin-esque houses, love the décor. But it looks....small, and pretty disjointed.
But I entered anyway - I would take the cash. But I bet you could take the house and rent it out for $$$.
I entered all last year when it was in north carolina (if i remember correctly) and it seemed nice because the taxes are low there. There is a lot of fine print to read through. Owning a house that size, in CA, the taxes would be a killer!
Also going through the fine print this year, I couldn't even enter anyways, because any affiliation with the many sponsor companies means no entries! Wasted all the time last year entering a contest I couldn't win!
There is a Boys and Girls Club raffle each year in our area. The prize is a house. Tickets are limited and it is $100 a ticket. You can also win other prizes and of course, your money goes to a great charity.
I think I'd rather gamble with the $100 than try to win this one here! It is really nice and I can see us living there. Taxes, smaxes! We're used to that already.

Do you have to choose one or the other? Why not just go for both. It only takes a few seconds every day. And to another poster, I thought the layout was wonderful...lots of privacy and most of it on one floor. I like all the outside living space with all the windows too. I am in LOVE with the kitchen!!! I must have the backsplash made of pieces of old boats. Gorgeous!!
