I couldn't do it, I would be so embarrased that I think everyone would know just by looking at me in the face.
But just recently I bought a cordless phone, 4 months after I bought it the phone did not last longer than 30 minutes before you would hear the "low battery beep " eventhough it had been in the base before. I went to try to exchange it and they wouldn't let me because it was over the 90 days period , and sending it to get fixed ( or whatever the manufacturer would do ) would mean I wouldn't have a phone for 8 weeks. So guess what I did? I bought an identical phone , came home and switched the phones, put it in the box and returned it as defective ( which it was defective ). If it had been older then I would have done something else but I have never had a phone that didn't hold the charge after 4 months from the time it was purchased. Was it right from me to do that ? Maybe not , but I expect it to at least last a year before I have to start buying new batteries.

I never thought people returned clothing that they have worn... tell me that does not happen with undergarments.
How about swimsuits. :crazy2:
Example: Bought DD a dress for homecoming - washed it according to the instructions on the garment tag. It was totally ruined when it came out of the washer.

Although we bought it on a deep discount clearance I still returned it. I explained to the clerk what happened, she got the manager & they took it back. Of course, she said to me "You really shouldn't have washed it", which kind of annoyed me because I followed the instructions on the tag - even washed more gentle than it called for.
This is something I just do not get. You have to wash garments before you wear them because of the chemicals in the fabrics so why do they get so uptight when you tell them that you have washed the item. It really jerks my chain when something red will say on the tag to wash it in warm water.....I've always washed colors that I think will fade in cold water to help preserve them. It's not my fault the manufacturer mislabels the item or the tag has the wrong instructions for cleaning the item and I refuse to waste my money of a product that is not acceptable to wear after the initial washing.

As for peeps that return items at whim they have really messed up things for people buying/receiving gifts. One year my DS received 2 stereos and took back the one from Sears. Since it was after Christmas they insisted he could only get a Sears card with the $ on it. I hate return policies where they only put the money on their own stores gc/shopping cards.

All of you should meet my cousin! Last year he & his wife flew from NC to FL to visit me. Their reason? For me to see their new baby. I'm totally not into babies & tried to discourage them from coming saying things really weren't set up at my place to accommodate a baby...that's certainly true! Cousin said "not to worry....he'd handle everything." I tried a few more tactics but he was hell bent on coming. Well, they rented a big SUV at the airport and got directions to a few local stores. My place ended up looking like a day care center! :earseek: There was some kind of bed they'd rented for the baby, a swing that played music, some gadget that rolled around and held the baby...never saw one before. :confused3 Was awful! I wanted to move out till they were GONE! Anyway, what really pissed me off so bad was when it came time to return everything to the store, they'd somehow not allowed enough time to do that (complained traffic was the reason) and asked WOULD *I* RETURN ALL THIS STUFF FOR THEM TO THE STORE?????? ABSOLUTELY NOT! They left the things here in my place to avoid missing their flight back to NC. It's been over a year & I understand he just ended up paying for all that stuff on his CC. Gave me permission to give it away if I chose to. I did...couldn't get around in my place till I did. Anyway, this is a case of "Buying To Return" that burned somebody good. :teeth:

Or you buy that $500 coat and wear it to the ball game and you clumsily drop a mustard-ed hot dog followed by a soda all over it. :earseek: Was it REALLY worth it? You can't return it when YOU ruin it!

LOL! This reminds me of an old roommate of mine! She has a Navy boyfriend, and they were always going to this or that formal thing. Once she bought a formal dress, writing a bad check for it, but as she told me, "it doesn't matter, because I"m going to return it tomorrow!" LOL, I told her that they weren't going to refund her money until the check cleared anyway. . . And subsequently later that evening, she spill hairspray (from a pump bottle) all over the front of her velvet gown!

I couldn't help but think that the Man Upstairs was sending her a message! :rotfl2:

YOU think that is dishonest. My SIL & BIL whom are on gvt asst. use the money that she gets for food and purchases drinks and snacks to resell them and make a profit! This is how they go on vacation (DISNEY EVERY YEAR) and get extra money. I think that is so shallow & not something I would want my kids to pick up on, but not that many people know what they are doing. I am not close to them, so I say nothing, but in the back of our minds we know how they pay for their things!!!

A few things...

1) No, I have never done this. However, my ex-husband broke his beloved PlayStation. Dog knows how - I was over it at that point and didn't bother to ask - but it's a safe assumption that he or his dipstick brother did something stupid to it (i.e., not a product quality issue like MsKanga's phone). He bought a new one from Best Buy, put the broken one in the box, and returned it the next day for a full refund. One of many nails in the large and lovely coffin of our marriage. ;)

2) It was simply amazing how many customers made returns to my store on March 18th, of green items that "didn't fit once [they] got it home."

3) Obviously worn items are not put back on the sales floor as new - no worries. They go in the "Damage" bin, and the ones in good shape are snatched up by employees at an embarrassingly large discount. It's the small "bright side" to sketchy returns. :flower:

ETA that our "Damage bin" is not on the sales floor(!) - pieces that employees don't buy are sent back to Corporate for disposal or donation to Goodwill/similar.

I hate it-

Often we jokingly call our store as "We dont sell anything, we rent it" and Ive seen everything come back from Half used box of Ziplocs to used pregnancy tests- Its amazing what people will return..

Ive grown to love Targets return policy

A used pregnancy test? How on earth does one return that? :confused3

Ok, ok, I'll fess up here. I've returned a used pregnancy test. But ONLY because it didn't work! It was a faulty test. It was supposed to do something to show that it was testing properly, and it didn't. I paid 15 bucks (at that time) for the darn thing, it better work! I actually just showed it to the pharmacist and exchanged it for another one, wasn't a big deal.

Totally different scenario - CnS - no "fessing" required. ;)

I have heard some stores are "blacklisting" customers. Another words not taking back the merchandise from certain customers that have many returns.

I was warned by Best Buy one time for returning tv's. I bought one, brought it home, had a buzz coming from it. I returned it, got another..same thing..buzz. I returned it they took it over to the service desk and tried it and said. We cant hear any buzz. I was like of course not thats because you have all your stereo speakers on so loud I can barely hear you! She goes on to say well they would take this back but would not accept any more returned tv's from me!

What is a re-tagger. I bought a carpet stretcher from Home Depot. My husband took it back when he was done. I bet everyone has done it at least once in their lives.
No, really I haven't ever bought anything knowing that I would be returning it after I was done using it.

I would agree with the poster who said that if you knwo yu have a one-time use for a piece of equipment, such as a carpet stretcher or a wallpaper remover, then rent it.

"Ok, I had to think about it, but I once returned a dress after I wore it to a wedding. I really loved it and wanted to keep it, but it criss crossed across the bosom and the seams of the fabric were torture and were really uncomfortable so I returned it. I didn't buy it with the intent to return it though. I had it cleaned (it was dry clean only) then called the store and explained it BEFORE I took it in (they said to return it when I told them about the seams)."

Well, that's different R&Hmom..you didn't buy it knowing full well you were going to return it. You bought it thinking "this is a great dress" wore it and realized that it didn't work for you. That's the reason to return things. The fact that you had it dry cleaned and called the store speaks to your honesty.

I think it's wrong... now admittedly I've purchased items like a portable DVD player for a drive down to WDW & then resold it on Ebay but I also took a slight loss on the item but what they are doing is dishonest... I used to know someone who would buy clothes, wear them to work with the tags tucked in & then returned them!! Gross!

I think in the end Karma is gonna get them..

btw many stores now have lists of cronic returners & retain the right to refuse returns from those listed offenders.
But it is not wrong to buy something, use it, and then sell it yourself on eBay. I am assuming you didn't advertise it as being new, so it was your DVD player to do with what you wished.

Had you bought it, used it for the trip and then returned it to the store, then you would be being slimy! ;)
