I like seafood...fish, lobster, crab, scallops, etc. I like clams (strips & whole bellies...not big though) but I've never had an oyster, even though they look like a big clam. Maybe that's why I've never tried them (the size) I watched a show the other day where they were "clamming" and just popped it opened, threw it in their mouth and just swallowed. I about :faint:

But then I've seen people chew them. :confused3 Why the difference? Do they taste anything like a steamer (little neck clam)

Yes, I chew all my food, even oysters.

I have wondered the same thing. I gag at the thought of swallowing those things whole. I just know it would NOT go all the way down.

What about mussells - do you chew those?

Yes, I do chew them. They are delicious!

I love clams too. They aren't the same. Oysters are sweeter, less salty and much more tender.

I love steamers, but they have to be on the smaller side. the larger ones are rough to chew.

Mussels are tender, too, but have a different consistency than oysters.

Ooohhh, how I wish it were summer....sipping a cold beer and enjoying some seafood by the water!

Just chewed half a dozen for lunch, loaded with cocktail sauce and horseradish, had a bowl of gumbo too. :cool1:

If you are going to swallow something whole, what's the reason for eating it unless you have just found your way out of a desert and haven't eaten in a long time. How do you taste them, and if you can't taste them, why bother?

To me it's always been things like that that puzzle me. Take Scotch for example. I know many people love Scotch, to me it's like kerosene except it doesn't taste as good. The reply is...Well it's an acquired taste. Why would I want to drink something so deplorable that I have to "get used to it" before I can enjoy it. I did try once with Sake (which was more like lighter fluid then kerosene) and found out that after about four hefty slugs of that, I probably would have cheerfully drank a glass of cesspool water and not even noticed.:scared::crazy2:

I think that throwing them down your throat in one gulp has to be the only way you can get the little snot-balls down without gagging on 'em? I never chew oysters, but that's because I keep well away from the things. If you can hold something's head under water and it doesn't drown, it isn't food.

I usually chew mussels and I chew oysters if they're fried, but not if they're served fresh. I dunno, that's just how I was taught to do it. There's a lovely fresh, slick feeling on your tongue and the taste of seafood in your mouth, then you swallow.:confused3 It's good. Fried oysters and steamed mussels taste totally different from fresh oysters, although all are lovely.

If you don't agree, and don't like them, don't eat them - there's an oyster shortage as it is, so I don't want new folks driving up the prices I pay. :teeth:

Yes, I chew them cooked or raw. Haven't eaten them raw for years, I am scared of getting sick from raw ones. I'm originally from New Orleans and fried oyster po' boys are my favorite way to eat them.

So fish isn't food?

Yes! You pull it out of the shell, put it on a cracker, squeeze some lemon and a dash of hot sauce on it. Perfect ;)

Why not save a lot of time and money and just eat a cracker with lemon and hot sauce on it. It'd be the same taste wouldn't it?

We just got home from vacation tonight, and I ate raw oysters for the first time on this trip. I had always been afraid to try them, but this trip I decided to give them a try. Our waitress told us how she eats them, on a cracker with lemon and cocktail sauce, so that is how we tried them and we really liked them! :) Yes, we did chew them.

The first time I ever had oysters was in a stew and I was told to try them and I literally chewed up a big one and I do chew them. It depends on the person, my aunt will not chew them, she will swallow little ones, as she doesn't like them. But yes I do chew them.

Good one! And, I actually like cocktail sauce on a cracker! That's ketchup, horseradish, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice. :thumbsup2

I might take 1 or 2 small bites, but I mainly just swallow. The same with mussels.
