I think that is a personal thing that varies person to person and why you might have to cancel a trip and use insurance. Four years ago, I didn't and never would have. But then my DH got sick. After he finally started doing better, we did our first family trip and definitely bought it. He can get very sick very quickly out of the blue. In fact, after our second trip, he ended up in the hospital a week after we got home. This will be our third trip and I bought it again. He's been very healthy lately, and when we book our fourth trip, I might be tempted to forgo it. For us, losing the $5000 we put into these trips would be a big deal to lose. Maybe we wouldn't lose it all, if we would rebook with disney, maybe they would allow some carryover, but the airfare is still non refundable. If I drove and only had a room reservation as opposed to a package deal, I might not get insurance since you can cancel those fairly last minute, and tickets are good as long as they aren't used.
not when it comes to disney vacations i don't.
although the cancellation policies have become a bit more strict this year i still know that if i had to cancel i would do it with enough time to get either all of my money back or all be my $200 deposit back.
now for other vacations i do recommend travel insurance.
it came in very handy in 2007.
i was to go to europe for a week and 3 days prior to going i found out that i had hyperthyroidistis so i had to postpone the trip for about 6 weeks.
if i had not had travel insurance me and the rest of my party would have lost out on $7,500!
