Do you buy name brand plants?

Do you buy name brand plants? Does a colored pot or fancy tag on a plant sway your decision to purchase one plant over another? Also, how many name brand plants can you name?

No. Usually my decisions on buying a plant is the following-if it is the type of plant that I am looking for, cost, if it is healthy, and if it will grow well at my house. We have bought Jackson and Perkins roses, but there are hardly named brand plants here since they would have to be shipped in and that would raise the cost more.

It really doesn't matter to me if the plant is 'name brand' or not. Although, I have not had good luck with the 'name brand' plants I have purchased. My J&P rose did not do well at all and the P. Allen Smith annuals I have purchased have not done well either.

Right now, I am lucky to find any plants at all, 'name brand' or not! No nurseries/garden centers, just Home Depot and Lowe's to shop from. Oy!

When purchasing plants I purchase stock plants. If they look healthy. I do buy certain varities of veggies and flowers.

When purchasing seeds I do purchase brand names, have noticed a difference in their germination.

Most of my daylilies have been purchased through Gilbert Wild and Sons. I would rather purchase root stocks, (hostas, daylilies, peonies, iris's) through mail order companies. You get a better root stock. I've had better success with bare root plants, when purchased through reputable companies.

If the plants look healthy and are reasonably priced then they are fine with me.

Name brands don't always mean better in my expierence.


Except like Mamu I do buy name brand seeds.

One of the garden centres that I like to patronize carries a wide variety of Monrovia plants. The price tags are a little bigger, but the plants always seem so healthy and lush. I don't necessarily buy them, but I always admire them.

Another garden centre has a special section with more unique, less typical plants, from Blooms of Bressingham. They're always interesting to check out.

For annuals, especially my container annuals, I do seem to gravitate towards the Proven Winners offerings.

When I shop for small plants it's more of an impulse decision. There are a few nurseries that I enjoy perusing. Just fun to browse. I don't set out to get name brand plants but I usually wind up with them. J&P roses and Monrovia lillies have worked more than most for me. Brand name seeds are worth it.
I worked in a wholesale flower nursery a long time ago. I learned a lot the hard way .
I can kill a name brand plant as easily as a brand.
