Do you bring your laptop with you on a cruise?

I know most of us will have a phone and maybe a tablet of some kind, but what about a laptop? Do you bring one with you on a cruise? If so, what do you use it for? If not, have you missed it for any reason?

We take ours to upload photos and clear our memory cards.

We also own a business though and sometimes things just come up that I need to handle even on vacation. I worked on my laptop the whole 15 hour drive on our way to our honeymoon cruise, lol.

Yeah, those darn camera photos. That's what I was thinking about, too. Sure, I could get a second memory card, but I'd like to make sure I have the photos I want and look at them, too. There's also the back up aspect of your photos that downloading them provides.

I seems to over do the back up plan. Spare card carried with the camera, nightly download to the computer and jump drive. Also the first picture taken is of our information, ie: Name and hotel staying at (no room number or other info) in case camera gets lost, same with autograph books.

I brought mine on one cruise so I could work on my PhD dissertation, but that was obviously a special circumstance :-)

We are debating whether we want to bring it for our 2017, which is two 7 nights B2B, but are leaning toward no.

We bring multiple memory cards for the camera so not all pictures are on one stick. I am considering something like the WD My Passport Wireless 1 TB Wi-Fi mobile storage device or something similar as a photo backup option.

I bring my laptop on cruises and vacations.
  • the screen is bigger than a tablet or phone.
  • I get java and flash
  • the keyboard is handy when on disboards
  • the bigger screen allows me to review camera pictures quicker.
  • sometimes I pack a 15 inch USB monitor.
  • DVD player allows me to watch my own movies.
  • sometimes I pack a soundbar for enhanced sounds with movies.

no laptops here.......
I only use my phone for photos.
My husband uses his iPad to read at night before bed.

I only take a laptop or tablet if we're spending a few days at WDW before or after the cruise. If so, I lock it up in the room safe while aboard the ship and leave it there. I don't take a lots of photos so wait until I get home to download them, and I don't feel the need to be in constant contact or post on social media.

DW sometimes has to check work emails but otherwise her laptop stays locked away as well.

I don't do a lot of social media but I did bring it on the Fantasy in August and never used it once. I wanted the laptop because we were doing WDW before and after the cruise and I find it much easier to use than a phone for making changes in my MDE. I also only emailed from WDW and not the cruise.

Since the Magic still has computers (I think....at least they did last year) I am leaving my laptop at home for the transatlantic cruise on the 17th.

When we were on in January, it looked like the area where the computers was in the Promenade lounge was a baby play area. I am 75% sure on this, as it wasn't something I was looking for, but kind of noticed when we were in the area and said hmm that is different.

We use it to back up photos and check email and weather. My phone is a cheapie so easier to use the computer.

Do I bring a laptop on a cruise? No. Do I miss it? Absolutely not.

I bring my phone for the DCL messaging app, and I bring a Kindle. I want to put as much space between myself and my laptop as possible when on a cruise.

Same for internet connectivity - I use a cruise like the Witness Protection Program. I fall 100% off the grid for a solid week, and it feels fantastic.

Thank you. When we were onboard May of 2015 they had the internet cafe area AND a baby play area right near it but it may have changed since then. When we saw it we also said "wow that's new". It was fine until some older kids took it over and were throwing things across the promenade lounge.

We own our business as well but thankfully have a couple of guys at home and a solid client base where my husband can now take a week off and disconnect from the business world. :) It wasn't always this way and we really enjoy our time off. It is awesome.
No internet packages, no phones, no computers, no email, no FB, Twitter, Snapchat etc...just my camera. If there are any issues at home, they just have to wait. It is not like we can ask the Captain to turn the boat around or drop us off somewhere to deal with the problem. Perhaps it would be different if the kids weren't with us and we needed to check in with them. But if we tried taking a Disney cruise without them I think they would revolt. And we actually love travelling with them so it all works out.

I bring my camera which I can go back thru the days shoots and delete any photos I don't want. I also bring a spare card just in case I love all the photos and cannot part with any of them. lol Since I can shoot 600 or so photos per card, and delete every evening (or so) I have not had this problem yet.

Was wondering same thing. We usually take ours with us when we travel. We usually download pictures taken that day so have empty disc in camera for next day.

We use multiple memory cards, always have, plus they are really cheap. There can be a failure (unlikely) with your main card so you should always have a spare.

We don't offload pictures on a cruise, (and rarely on other vacations). I save all of that boring stuff for when I'm not paying $214 per night per person to enjoy my floating hotel. It also allows me to relive the vacation when we get home. Plus using a real computer monitor is still better than a laptop monitor, 36" vs 15.4". Storage is cheap and doesn't take up space like a laptop does.

Yes, we bought a small laptop to bring on trips. Mostly because we tend to take longer trips (14 days and longer at a time) and it's handy to check in periodically on our emails. We also use it for backing up our photos. Yes, we take lots of memory cards, but it's just a safety measure to be able to back them up immediately.
