Do you agree with this?

We have plenty winter mornings with windchill of well below zero. I think that is too far for a kid to be walking in the morning.

Lol...we lived in Alaska where it was plenty cold! But if you want to take your kids to school that's great, but I still don't think a mile and a half is too far too walk.

Well, I'd imagine his child would be an exception to the rule. He could have been a target for many people out there. As revolting as that is, there are people who would try to get back at the parents via the children. That child did nothing wrong and deserved as much protection as they could give.

I doubt it was having him singled out. I believe he was from IL unless I'm losing it (quite possible!). I know for the last 10? years (whenever my DD started Kindergarten) -- the Kindergarteners *MUST* have an adult pick them up.

That even includes the bus stop. The bus drivers are not allowed to let Kindergarteners off the bus if they don't see a parent there. If they do, they will be fired. No parent, the kid gets driven back to the school, to the office & numbers start being called.

Now...1st grade, you are thrown to the wolves and can walk your 1 1/2 miles home alone without a 2nd glance from the school but they are tough in Kindergarten.

It sounds like it might be a state thing if other schools are also doing the adult must be present for Kindergarten. I thought maybe it was just our school.

However, they also have a system that if your child isn't in school for an hour & you haven't called them in, they will be calling you to verify. I thought that was just a nice thing our school did in case something horrible did happen & you had assumed they were in school all day/the school assumed they were home -- that's several hours with a child missing & nobody knowing it. Then I was reading some state thing & realized they were doing it because it was the law!

Jeez - if we lived in the OP's town, my mother probably would have been locked up! She drove me to and from school everyday and she always gave kids in my neighborhood rides when she saw them walking along the way to school. The kids and parents were always very grateful to have a ride and to have someone looking out for their kids.
