Do we still need lanyards?

I haven't been to UO in a couple years. We're staying on-site and will have EPs. Last time we had our paper ticket and EPs in a lanyard. Are both tickets still paper? Do the tickets get linked to our accounts on the app in any way now?

The EP is your room key, assuming you are staying at one of the EP resorts.

You can add the tickets to the UO App. You can also exchange the print-at-home paper tickets for actual credit card size tickets (they are water-resistant waxy business card type feel) at the ticket desk of your resort, so they're more durable & fit in a lanyard.

We're picking up our tickets once we get to Universal. I want to pay with UO gift cards and I don't think you can do that on their website. Once we pick up tickets there, is there a way to "upload" them to the app? Thanks!

Yes, you can either type in the ticket number or scan the barcode to add it to your wallet in the Universal App.

FWIW, it's really just as easy to slide the ticket / EP into a pocket as it is to use a lanyard.

You don't need it but I would say you should have one, it is easier than taking out your room key at every attraction.

Important thing to remember is the lockers, you need you ticket or pass to open those. Also they want one person per group to go to the lockers. We found it handy to have our sherpa, aka DH, have all our passes on one lanyard because we usually needed more than one locker. Also, you don't want to keep your ticket/pass in anything that you'll have to put in the locker at Hulk.
