Do we really need to hold on to our hats and glasses?

I wear glasses and can't see anything without them on. I'd hate to have to take them off on rides as I will miss a lot, but I'd also hate to lose my glasses! I've ridden Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Test Track with my glasses on with no problem - though I did literally hold on to my glasses the whole time just in case! Should I be concerned about losing them on rides like Rockin Roller Coaster and Splash Mountain?

My husband has worn his glasses on both of those rides with no problems. I am always a little nervous for him on RNRC, but really there's not a good place to put them if you take them off without worrying about them getting smashed!

I would worry more about RnR probably than any other ride. It does go fast and have some inversions (or it feels like that anyway) so you may want to remove your glasses just for that one. I've lost about 3 lipsticks (Clinique too...eeks!) on that ride out of pockets that don't usually have stuff falling out of them.

You could first try riding it w/ a cheap pair of sunglasses on & then you'll know if it's safe to try wearing your prescription.

what about getting one of those straps that hook to the ends and drap/wrap around the back of your neck, so if the glasses come off you still have a really good chance of not losing them?

I wish my teenage son had one a couple of trips ago when he lost his brand new glasses (only 2 weeks old) on Kali River when he got doused with a big wave :scared1:

When I worked at BTMR, we regularly found hats and glasses (often broken from the impact) strewn around the track every morning.

There's a reason for that warning. Ignore it at your risk.

I'm in the same boat as you, I can't see anything without my glasses. The first time I rode RNRC, I took them off and was pretty bummed afterwards - my fiance was talking about how much he liked the theme of the ride with all the road signs, etc. and I was thinking "... what road signs?!" The second time, I kept my glasses on and just kept one hand holding onto the side of my glasses. I think it would've been fine without me holding onto them, but I just wanted to be safe since I'd be lost if they fell off!

I keep my glasses on on all the rides and have never had a problem. I've ridden everything at Disney (coaster-wise). I'm like you and can't see anything without them! I do like the idea of having the glasses attached to something around your neck if you are worried about losing them. I don't do that, but I do bring a spare backup pair to WDW when we go. I actually keep them in our "bathroom bag" and they go on all of our trips no matter where we are going.

I always have to take mine off! My glasses are so flimsy and oh so necessary to get through the day -- HAHA!

I definitely think hats are endangered. Glasses...I've never taken mine off in 30+ years of WDW trips. However, the post from our CM in the thread is not to be taken lightly:confused3

I haven't been do Disney yet but I do have a strap I wear on amusement or water rides. I call it my nerd strap. Technically I believe it's called a sport strap. I don't like the ones that are loose. This is the old fashioned kind that goes around the back of your head. It looks bad but when you're talking upwards to 500.00 for a pair of glasses I don't care how I look. Found mine on EBay since they don't really sell them in the stores anymore.

I use one of these too, since I got tired of seeing everything out of focus or worrying about losing my glasses. They do sell them in the parks, at most of the stands that sell sunglasses. I think I paid something like $4.50 for the last one I bought a couple of years ago; a small investment to hang on to very expensive prescription glasses! I always pack a couple of them now, so if I mislay one I can usually find another. (I also pack a jeweler's screwdriver and a couple of extra screws in case I lose one; people are usually nice enough to tell me I have a screw loose!;))

I was thinking about these types of straps too.

you may even be able to cover most of the strap with your hair if it's a layered cut. worth a try if you don't want the strap to be visible...I'm like the above poster-I don't care what it looks like-my eyeglasses cost too much money to be taking a chance with and I can't see without them!

I don't know about the glasses, but funny story about the hat.

When we rode Splash Mountain, my Mom wore a hat. On the big drop, her hat flew off. The guy behind her was holding both arms up in the air screaming and it flew into his hands and he generously caught it and gave it back to her. The funny thing was the photo they took on the drop shows the hat flying off her head and into the guys hands. I so wish to this day we would have bought that photo because it was just too funny.

I wear contacts or glasses.

I really want to se everything. If I wear the glasses, I wear a strap on the rides that need it.

My favorite hat story is my husband on Figment. The CM is like "watch your hat sir." And my husband poo pooed him. Didn't remember the end of the ride...my honey was frantic looking for his hat in the dark...real smooth ...

From one fellow glasses wearer to the other...get the strap! :thumbsup2

Don't you think that if you ride RnR with your naked glasses on you'll keep thinking about the possibility that, at any moment, you could lose them forever?

Without even ever having a chance to say goodbye? :sad1: Goodbye glasses, we have enjoyed seeing many things together. But no more.

Because you will be obsessed with these thoughts you will not be able to enjoy the rollercoaster as much...which means in essence that you won't enjoy your entire vacation as much as you would have!

So really, a mere $5 could save your entire vacation.

Okay, I know I'm being a little dramatic here... but only a little.

My strap is beige so I doubt most people would even see it, and if they do...who cares! :)

One more vote for the Strap! I'm another who can't see a thing without my glasses, and that was one of the best investments I made. What I have is a "sunglasses strap," that slides over your earpieces and has a bead you can draw up in the back to make them tight or loose. This was not only good for wild rides, but also kept my glasses in place for the 3D attractions (I even wore it to see UP in 3-D this year, to keep my regular glasses on snugly so I didn't have so much trouble with the 3D glasses over them).

Another one for the strap! Did you ever think about contacts though? I mean like the cheap kind you get at pharmacy's or 1-800-contacts?

My son nearly lost his glasses on RnRC. He grabbed them as they were flying off his face. I lost mine a few weeks ago at Six Flags... In retrospect, it was kind of funny.
