Do we really need a Carryon?

I'm not sure if we really need to bring a carry on or not. Our flight leaves at 7:15am our time and lands at 9:40 orlando time. It is myself, DH, DS6 and DD3. We will take the ME to our resort, checkin, grab lunch and head to MK. We have dinner at Kona at 5:30 and may go back to MK or back to room from there. We will not swim and I will have my tote bag with wipes, camera, kids pj's and a few odds and ends. Do we really need to bring a carry on bag with cloths or anything as I would think by bedtime our luggage should be there? I just don't want to overpack but don't want to end up without what we would need at bedtime either. Thanks for the advise as we always drive and flying seems to take more planning and packing much lighter.

Regardless of ME and the luggage delivery, IMHO its a good idea to pack a carryon with essentials for the first 24 or so hours in case the airline loses or misdirects your luggage. If you are lucky enough not to need any medicines or other specialty items for your family and you are willing to take the chance thay you may have to purchase clothing, toiletries etc if your luggage is lost by the airline then you may want to take the chance.

Just not sure they really allow many tolietry items like my make-up, suncreen, liquids, ect. on the plane anyway. We don't take any meds that we would need by the next day if that helps people to answer my question better. Thanks so much. I do see about the luggage getting lost so may want to pack everyone an extra outfit.

I second that. I always carry a change of clothes and essentials just in case....you never know if your luggage will disappear.

I went in June and I was able to carry on my make-up (most containers have less than the 4 oz. maximum), I brought a small sunscreen with me...what liquids are you thinking of?

I'm going to answer with the ever unpopular 'no carry-on'. Sounds like your tote has you covered with the items you mentioned. The hotel has the shampoo and soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste if your luggage doesn't come within the 12 hours between arrival and bedtime. If you have more than one checked suitcase, then pack some clothes for each of you in each case rather than only one person per case. One may get lost, but it is quite unlikely that they all will get lost. Surely at least one of them will show up by bedtime.

If you do bring a carryon, you can always leave it with bell services before heading to the parks if your room is not ready when you arrive. It will be in your room along with the rest of your luggage from ME when you get to your room later. :goodvibes

I 2nd that. Sounds like you'll have everything in your tote bag that you'll need. ME will have your luggage to you way before bedtime.

The less I carry on the better. The kids take a carry on bag for games, and I pack my makeup in that bag (CANT live without that should they lose my luggage!) Everything else I can live without for a day or 2. If they do lose my luggage, I'll wear the same pants the next day and buy a new shirt. No biggie.

For the record, any item you bring on a plane with 'stuff' in it, other than a purse/computer case/camera bag, that you don't check in to be transported in the luggage compartment of the plane, IS a carry-on. Just because it's not a roll-aboard suitcase doesn't mean it's not a carry-on.

Also, the limit for liquids and gels is 3.4 factory-labeled containers; not four ounces, not four ounce bottles that are half-full, not small, clear plastic travel containers into which you transfer some of your shampoo.

I think we're having a difference in choice of wording here. I consider anything I carry on a plane to be 'carryon'. I usually have a totebag with my 'stuff' in it....I consider that to be carryon.
And, I always, no matter where I'm flying, put a change of clothes, some toiletries, my travel docs, swim suit (if going to WDW!) and a book in my tote. Yes, hotels have shampoo and other toiletries. But, what if you get 'stuck' at the airport? Or on the plane, on a runway? I just like to be prepared.
So....it sounds like you have it covered, just not in a carryon piece of luggage, but in a tote.

Thanks for everyones thoughts on this, they are all good ideas. I think I will stick with my disney tote and stick the kids a change of cloths in a ziploc with their PJ's. I'm not up on all the airline do's and don'ts but I'm not going to risk bringing my cosmetics on the plane and then have to throw them away. That will cause me more trouble than just waiting to get them when they arrive. I don't know if it is true but I heard you cannot take lipstick tubes on the plane? May bring a older one and if I have to throw it away no big deal. I have not heard of anyone not getting their luggage for days so I will just probably risk it. We are an 1 hour and 25 minute nonstop flight and I plan to have ME yellow tags on all our luggage so hopefully we will be just fine. Can you bring those small gel hand sanitizers on the plane that are a few ounces? Again, any ideas are appreciated and any other idea's for things in my tote.

Items like medicine, cameras, IPODS and other expensive equpment doesn't belong in checked luggage. Luggage sometimes get delayed and sometimes thieves go through checked luggage and steal valuables.

You don't need a big roller bag but you should at least bring a small "tote bag" with the above items and maybe a bathing suit or change of clothes in case your checked luggage gets delayed.

Yes, but they should be in the original bottle, less than about 3 ounces and zipped into a quart bag. I also take a few sanitizer wipe packets and toss them into the quart ziploc.

We generall fly in late at night and need carryons for stuff to go to bed and stuff to get up in the morning, but even then we don't use a traditional roller bag. We have a computer case, hubby's CPAP bag, (both with wheels) and a small shoulder bag. Those three small bags can hold everything we need for 24 hours.

However, as a solo, I have arrived early in the morning and did without a carryon of any kind. I was dressed for the parks, had everything I needed for the day in my cargo pockets, also had a large ziploc in my pocket. Dumped my pocket contents into the ziploc, ran it through the scanner, and was good to go. (This was before the days of liquid problems). I did not get back to my room till very late that night and my bag was there. If it hadn't been there, I would have gone to the gift shop the next morning, purchased an outfit, and continued on.

Ever since we arrived at the airport at 8am for a flight and by 10pm that evening we were at an another airport (which was not our destination), we always carry-on what we will need for the next 24 hours. Between airport shops and the shop at the airport hotel that was still open at 10pm, there were not a lot of options to buy what we needed. Catching a cab to get to grocery store or 7-11 when we were in a strange place was not that attractive an option.

Best of luck -- Suzanne

Your airline should have a link to allowed/restricted items for carry on and checked luggage. if not, go to www.tsa.gov. They have an extensive list and a short video, too.

I believe lipstick is ok (if it's a solid and not a lip gloss), but I'd put it in the ziploc bag anyway. Lip gloss will have to go in the ziplic. Hand sanitizer must go in the ziploc bag and be less than 3.4oz.

And your valuables should go with you, too. And film, if you're still using a 35mm camera.

Since you have young kids, I highly recommend taking FOOD with you as well. The time really racks up after checking in, waiting in security, then waiting at the gate, then waiting on the plane before you take off. And god knows what actual food items will be on board for you and your kids to eat.

Also, several flights I took this summer were delayed one to six hours....so it's best to be prepared. A lot of the time, the terminals don't have much in the way of decent food for kids, either.

String all the time together, and it can be A LONG TIME before you and your kids have any access to food.
