Do we have a thread for first-time 2007 Half Walkers? Should we start one?

Anyone else besides me walking the 2007 Half for the first time? I'm wondering what other walkers are doing to train.

This is the first time ever that I've done something even remotely athletic. I mean, besides horseback riding. I was a timer for the high school volleyball team, does that count??? :rotfl:

Anyway, just looking to compare training plans, ideas, suggestions, and nerves as we count the months, then weeks, then days till the 2007 Half.

That would be me! I plan on being there, walking my first half.

Right now I am still working on general conditioning, and trying to get rid of some more of the extra weight I'm currently carrying. After that I will be trying to increase my speed because I really want to finish without getting swept. I will be hanging in there with you!

:cool1: Thanks PerfectMatch! So far it's you and me! :cheer2:

I too am working on the weight. I need to lose 50 lbs. Two years ago I lost 30, but I have gained 25 back. Ugh! But I know a combination of WW & walking works for me.

I started walking on the TM again about six weeks ago. I had ACL replacement surgery in August so I was thrilled to get back on the TM at all, even though I started really slow. Only 20 minutes at 2.5. I am now up to 40 minutes at 3.6 with 15 minutes at 1% and 6 minutes at 3.9!

I'm doing it just every other day now, but after the first it will be five days a week, Wed & Sats off. I try to add a little something every time I get on the TM, either speed or more time on 1% or a little more time overall.

I'm also doing some stretches before and after but I need to add to that. I'm not doing enough of them.

Yeah, I'm glad I'm not the only one doing the 2007 Half Walking for the first time! I'm glad to see you here! :wave2:

After the marathon weekend, we'll be converting to the WISH walking/running club. The ultimate goal will still be the WDW marathon weekend for 2007, but as a more general group, we can also talk about other events we'll be training for along the way like the Minnie and the DL half.

You're welcome to stick with the main group since many of us will carry onto 2007, but up to you if you want to start a dedicated walking thread :)

I walked/ran the 1/2 in 2005 (skipping the 2006 because of a new job), but planning on 2007 (I'm not sure about the half or the full yet, though!), but I'd love to join you guys for training support!!

No no, I think we should stick with you "professionals". :goodvibes I have learned SOO much for you guys!

Don't you agree, ladies?? :flower:

I can't wait to read all the trip reports after the marathon. I am living vicariously thru you 2006'ers.

I do have a question today though. Is there a limit to how many walkers can register for the Half? Anyone know?

BTW....

P & PD to everyone doing the 2006! I'll be with you in spirit!!!

This might be too personal but is anyone willing to give up their info so I can track them next weekend? I just want to see what tracking is like, and also it would be so cool to follow along with you. :bounce:

oh wowser you already have a clippie for the 2007 WDW marathon? is that for 1/2 paricipants too? (mod in me talking -- can you add that to the sticky on the regular board of 'ALL THE WISH CLIPART HERE'?)

sorry - i can be a bit anal on my housekeeping

anyhoo -- i'm considering the 1/2 in 2007 -- it will be my fourth 1/2 though but we can all train together! it really helps me stay motivated!

Come on, come on, sigh up! Registration is Monday! :cheer2:

I didn't see any 07 Half Clip art so I just used this one. I am pretty sure that is where I got it from, I mean from ALL THE WISH CLIPART HERE.

Honeibee...

Just wanted to tell you that you're exactly where I was last year at this time. I stumbled across the 2005 WISH team and found out a bunch of people like me were getting ready to race! I needed a reason to exercise and they looked like they were having so much fun...now the rest is history.

The year will go by faster than you think. I registered for the half on Jan 13, 2005...can't believe it's almost time to take down the registration slip I taped to my desk when I printed it out that day.

Many of us used the training program in the book, Marathoning for Mortals by John Bingham. I think Cam trained on the walking program, I used the walk/run the half, and I believe Krista used the run/walk the half. I think Carrie used it also to train to run the full.

You can add me to the list, too!!! :cheer2:

Like perfectmatch300, I'm just trying to get my body used to moving every day! :teeth:
I told my DH I found the perfect walking program for me: "Couch potato to 60 in 12 weeks"!!!! :rotfl:

Hugs and Pixie Dust to all the 2006 participants!!
We can't wait to hear all about it when you get back!!

My suggestion---take the time to "train" to "train". Work in getting yourself from nothing to about 5K (3.1 miles). Your event training won't need to start until the fall. Now is the perfect time to diet (if you desire to do so) and just work on getting yourself fit. Also--your pace times--don't worry about them at all right now. The proof is in the medal for many wishers past that what you are at one year out--gets significantly conditioned to that mandated pace requirement.

Yes there is a limit--this year it was increased due to the splitting of the events into two separate days. I will be told the facts and figures at our Team in Training Pasta Party. The two events filled up by September--but don't wait too long to register. Register as soon as you are able. It secures your spot--and then makes it all "official" and provides that dangling carrot (or Donald Medal ;)) to encourage you to stick to your plan.

I used MFM as well--but due to getting my meniscus tear removed---I'm about ready to burn that book. It will all change once I get this under my belt and can feel normal again. PT was against me trying any new things in the past couple of weeks (like kneeling, stretching the quad) even if I felt ready so as not to risk causing a set back. So after I have Donald--will be going for Minnie and ready to actually train properly :).

I am seriously thinking about the 1/2 next year. I have never been the really physical type in my family. I did surprise my husband and children last year by doing the 25mile MS bike tour. I will probably be doing the MS walk this year since I have a confirmation on the day of this year's bike tour. So I need to get ready for that. That I think is a 6 mile walk so it is a good practice for it.

I will be getting a treadmill some time this week. It was supposed to be a Christmas present but we got tied up last week with my mil being in the hospital for pneumonia. I can't wait to get back to walking. I have had problems with bone spurs in the last few years but they seemed to have calmed down.

So excited to see everyone already getting ready for 2007. I plan to register as soon as we get back from this year's 1/2. :Pinkbounc The only question is whether I will plan on doing the 1/2 again (possibly jogging it or walk/run) or if, like my role model and inspiration, Lily, try for the full. I'd really LOVE to have a Mickey medal! Just not sure I can make the time commitment to train for a full, especially, since it seems that training to walk may actually require larger chunks taken out of my days since it will take so much longer than jogging it.

Looking forward to spending the year training with you guys! It is so much fun to "train to train", just getting into shape a bit and learning about nutrition (thanks so much, Lisa Loves Pooh!) and carving out a schedule. Then, all of the sudden, you are 14 weeks out and ready to actually train. It is very exciting!

I'm still here! I'm still walking! It seems like I have been training to train forever. Actually, it has been almost 3 years now. When I first started, I could barely walk across a room, never ming a 1/2 marathon. Now I am pretty comfortable with distances of about 7-8 miles, but I am not able to do that at "stay ahead of the sweeper" pace, which is very important to me. I can do it for 2 miles, but after that distance in a Turkey Trot over Thanksgiving my legs were shaking! So I need to work on losing more weight, increasing my distance, and increasing my speed.

My biggest problem - my knees. I'm afraid I may be joining Lisa in the meniscus surgery club. I will find out more when I go back to the Dr next week. That's what he seems to think it is though. I am sure losing more weight will help with that, but if I already have a tear that alone will not solve it. My Dr appt is not until after the 2006 marathon weekend. I will keep you posted.

Can't wait to see all the 2006 participants at Trails End on Friday. I know that will get me motivated to finally go for it in 2007.

I know you can do it next year!!! You are almost there!! Just a few more miles, and a little faster, and you can make it! You have come so far in both your weight loss and your training, I'll bet it will go even better this year!

Good luck with your Dr. appointment-- and if surgery is the best thing fo ryou to stay healthy and active, then I think it is worth it!!

Thanks for the support, DisneyGirl. It has been a long road for me as I missed out on both the '05 and '06 half marathons because I knew there was no way on earth I was going to be ready. I am almost hoping they will say surgery can correct my knee problems. Feels strange to be saying that, but I am so tired of all the problems I am having. Although it is taking me a long time to get to the starting line, I am determined that I will get there!

Count me in! I just heard some more details about the Half-Marathon at WDW (namely that the pace seems do-able compared to some marathons!).

I HATE running, etc..... but I figure with WDW as a goal (and as scenery!), this is something I can finally run in with DH... who ADORES it :confused3

I haven't figured out a program, etc yet.... but I really want to do this! :goodvibes

I can't believe that an innocent question I asked about 3 years ago would lead to the 3rd annual WISHWalkers Marathon group! I never in my wildest dreams would've imagined when I posted that doing the half was a dream of mine and would anyone be interested in doing this with me, that one person would respond "yes" to me. And look at us now! You all are talking about training for the half in 2007! WOW!!! I'm in total awe!!

Well- I'll be rejoining the group this year! I've decided to jump back on the bandwagon and do the half in 2007. DH is probably going to do it with me again, but this time hopefully without the back pack!! :) He's so good to me isn't he??? And guess what else??? This time I'm gonna be sure that I'm not held up at the back entrance into the MK!!!!
So...... add me to the list! I'm Baaaaaaack!! :)
