Do they still...Do you remember when...

I remember hearing the opening notes of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" followed by cheers as the American section of Illuminations' musical salute to each country of WS began. While I love Illuminations: Reflections of Earth (I think the fireworks are much better now), I think there was something very special about the original Illuminations. It was not as much about fireworks as about celebrating the music and beauty of each country. The only thing that always seemed weird, is that they didn't update it to include Morocco and then Norway. Those countries remained dark around the Promenade as Illuminations was presented.

I read to heard somewhere, the reason that Morocco is never illumated during any firework celebration has to do with their religion.

Remember, the Empress Lily Riverboat, where Chef Mickey's was held before it moved to the Contemp?

- mickey head butter at the resturants :)

- the magic shop on main street

- veggie, veggie fruit, fruit.

- MSEP

I remember the ticket books.

I also remember when there was only one monorail, what is now called the resort monorail.

I also remember the Magic Shop on Main Street, the Movie house that you paid an A ticket to get into, the Skyway, If you Had Wings. And most of all I remember when Downtown Disney was the shopping village and most of the time it was empty.:D

I remember walking into the Expostion Hall and seeing the plans for Epcot the new and coming park :bounce: :Pinkbounc

I remember eating at the Odessy restaurant, Captain EO, the opening of the Living Sea.

Oh so many memories :)

Does anyone remember Disney Handwiches? They were sandwiches in a cone shaped bread. I always like them.

but I remember a huge shop in Epcot, I think it was in that area. This would have been about 5 years ago. I remember it having 2 levels. I really don't think it was Mouse Gears. Please, someone tell me I'm not losing my mind!:o

I remember when you had to make meal reservations at Epcot at 2-way TV stations (you could see and hear the reservation agent) in "Earth Station" at the base of Spaceship Earth. Very cool.

OMG!!! YES! In fact, on our visit a few years ago after not having gone for a long time, I actually looked for this! That was so cool, but a real pain in the butt.

What a great post--thanks for bringing back these memories. It's funny how you forget these things.:(

I remember the first few times that we went to Disney World when I was 5 (1972) all the characters were out contstantly! And I have reels of movies to prove it! No scheduled times or places. Just the surprise of "bumping' into them! I love watching my home movies from Disney World!

How about the old Winnie the Pooh the roly poly one with the Hunny Pot on his head. I loved him!

Oh, back to my home movies I have my self on film with Dumbo with his ears hanging down to the floor. My girls are now 13 & 14 and have never even seen Dumbo live at Disney!:(

Oh and according to my mom when I was about 7, we stayed at the Poly for less than $50. Unfortunately, that's not one of my memories!!!

What about the Wedway People Mover which is now the TTA(?). I was always chicken to ride space mountain when I was younger and this was a thrill to ride to see the insideof space mountain.
Now that I'm older I love Space Mountain, but still have to ride the Wedway for ole time's sake.

One thing I missed in a HUUUGE way during our last visit (in March) were the outgoing and informative bus drivers. I hadn't been to WDW since 1997, but during every visit before that, I can remember boarding the bus and getting a fun ride to whatever park we were going to. They'd do trivia, they'd sing songs, they'd tell us "secrets" about plans in the works - you really felt like you were already on a ride!!

Sadly, we only had one driver even remotely talkative during our March trip. I wish they'd come back!!

Does anyone remember Disney Handwiches?

I used to love those!! I remember getting them at The Land in EPCOT!

Also (probably not politically correct anymore) the Main St Tobacco Shop - you used to walk in there and be hit with the smell of fresh tobacco.

Does anyone remember when the Main Street Theater used to show old Disney cartoons? We discovered that the movies are still being shown in the back of the building on the right as you enter MK. What is it, the Exposition Hall? You just walk past the displays and the theater is in the back. I relaxed and watched Steamboat Willie again during our last trip.

Oh Yes, I had forgot all about those. They were so good! It was always a must for at least one lunch!

Oh I wish they still made those :)

I miss seeing all of the toparies along the roads to the hotels. I remember after you pasted the main entrance and took the rode to Comptempary there were lots of toparies along the road. I alwyas felt like, I finally made it. I t made it special and after the long wait to get there you finally made it.

I also remember and I don't know if anyone else rememebers, in MGM when you took the backstage tour after you left EarthQuake canyon, the tram would take you into the town. It would stop on the New York street and performers would come out a put on a street scence of gansgters of each tram. I love it. It also seems they gave you alot more information then, than they do now.

When I went as a "kid"--from 1980-92 or so, we had "key" cards--credit card type things, kind of like the room keys they have today, but with impressed numbers. You used them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, little speed boat rentals and to get into the parks.

Gosh! Do I ever remember Key Cards!

All of my visits to the Contemporary during the 1980's were accompanied by Key Cards.

My nephew (more like a little brother, as he's only 3 years younger than me) and I used to go all over the park by ourselves with those Key Cards.

We'd "ditch" the parents, hop on the monorail or a Disney Bus and hit the parks. At lunch time, we'd head over to the Empress Lilly River Boat and each of us would order an appetizer, a salad, soup, an entree (always Lobster Tail...for like $40 each) and a huge dessert. We had our choice of beverages. Decadence!

The CM's would smile (maybe because we were all of 14 and 11 years old and ordering lobster tail) and when the check came, we'd hand over our Key Card and not only would the meal be covered with no charge to our room, but the server would get a 15% tip, too.

Then we'd head back to the Contemporary Resort and take out a mouseboat (in those days, I think they were called Water Sprites). Then, we'd spend several hours zipping around Bay Lake.

Gosh, the Key Cards were wonderful. Back then, they came with something called THE PLAN. And being "on the plan" SAVED MONEY.

We had our room in the Contemporary Tower, unlimited admission to the parks, unlimited use of water craft (even water skiing was absolutely free), unlimited meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner (with appetizer, soup, salad, entree, dessert and beverage...at ANY RESTAURANT in the World), and unlimited tours & classes.

I took a great class with a behind the scenes look at entertainment in the MK (tour of the underground, etc.). I received this neat hardback book with information to help me decide if I wanted a career in the entertainment industry and had the opportunity to visit the Diamond Horseshoe Revue and meet with the stars. My nephew took the Disney Animation class and met with animators. It was a hoot!

I remember going to the Empress Room aboard the Empress Lilly River Boat and at the end of the meal, our server brought us the check. My brother-in-law almost had a heart attack, because for the 5 of us, it was $450 (before the tip...which I think 20% was included with the plan for the nicer restaurants like this one). I remember him telling my sister, "We're going to get a bill for this when we get home, this can't be legal." But it was. All of it was included in THE PLAN.

However, the five of us probably gained 10 pounds each in the space of nine days. We'd never eaten so much food in all our lives. Thank goodness we were walking a lot, too.

The cost of the plan was so reasonable back then. We got our Key Cards for just a little more than the price of the room and theme park admission.

One last memory! Does anyone remember the Gulf Coast Room at the Contemporary Resort?

It was such a nice little restaurant. Reminds me somewhat of Victoria & Alberts. We used to visit once or twice on every trip.

Our favorite server carried two polaroids in his pocket of his "pride and joy"...one picture was of a box of Pride Detergent and the other picture was of a bottle of Joy Dishwashing Liquid.

He made such a big deal about showing us these two pictures of his PRIDE AND JOY that when he finally did show us the pictures it was a riot. He had other corny jokes too. I wish I could remember them.

You would think his humor would stick out like a sore thumb in such a formal restaurant, but it was wonderful. I think he serenaded us with a violin, too. Wish I could remember for sure.

Does anyone remember this restaurant? I still have my book of matches (wood grain background with a pink rose and gold stem).

Ahhh...the memories.

OK Disney Fans, How about these....

While remodeling my parents basement last year, I ran across a lot of things from our first trip in '76. Among those are....

-2 Day entrance to the MK (The only park, of course) was $18.25 which included 16 attractions, World Cruise to Treasure Island, and admission to the NEW River Country.

-My Mother had made notes that there were Motels inside Disneyworld which included CR, Poly and the Golf Resort.

-I have the remains of a ticket book which still has an "A" ticket, and a World Cruise ticket

-I have guidebooks from '76 and '77. Some of the old "lost' attractions that haven't been mentioned are Caribbean Arcade, Mile Long Bar, Yankee Trader Culinary Aids, Tricornered Hat Shop, Skyway, Mr. Toads Wild Ride, 20K Leagues under the sea, Troubador Tavern (This is where you could get the fruit juce in containers shaped like Fruit!), King Stephan's Banquet Hall (Now Cinderella's Royal Table-Can anyone tell me why the name changed? It's a pretty cool piece of trivia), Circle Vision 360, Mission to Mars.

-The guide also included GAF Photo tips, The afternoon parade was "America on Parade", and the fireworks had a red, white & blue theme.

-River Country admission was $3.50

-Parking was 50 cents

-I also have stuff from Silver Springs, St. Augustine, Kennedy Space Center, etc.

I also remember the waterfalls at the entrance to Tomorrowland.

King Stephan has nothing to do with Cinderella. It has to do with either Snow White or Sleeping Beauty

That's right. Why would Sleeping Beauty's father have a restaurant in Cinderella's Castle?
