Do these paint roller shields really work?

Or does paint splatter all over the place anyway? I need to repaint my ceiling. (Yes, I will be using a drop cloth anyway. :)

I would say they are maybe 80% effective. The drop cloth is a good idea.

They are a pain in the neck...

You want to reduce splatters? Don't 'push' the roller too hard against the surface. Some people think they need to apply pressure to 'push' the paint into the surface. No...just roll it on easy; almost like just 'laying' it on the surface.

The more pressure you apply to the roller, the more spatters.

If you use good paint (we like Benjamin Moore) and use a broom handle on the roller you won't have to worry about splatters.
