the closer you get to Christmas/New Year's Day travel?

I checked the fares yesterday on American Airlines from Kansas City, MO, to Orlando, and it has gone up $50 each. Should I book now or hold out?

Since we fly out of Kansas City I watch those fares pretty closely (although not for those dates) and I have not been able to find any patterns at all!

You might at least wait until Southwest comes out with their holiday fares (not out yet but I would hope they would be in another month or so) and see if the other airlines will try to match them or at least come close.
