we just returned from a wonderful vacation at Vero Beach. The weather the first 2 days was cold but the kids could still get into the pool. the 2nd 2 days the weather was wonderful and we even got into the ocean.

Our trip home was awful. We were stuck in I95 construction traffic for over 3 hours. There were no warning signs telling travellers of the potential delays until it was too late to get off the expressway. We say at least 20 cars pulled off the side of the road with there hoods up. I was extremely upset that SC did not have alternate route warnings posted at the rest areas.

When we finally got to an exit, the people at the McDonalds "had no idea if there was any construction on I95". I was hoping they could tell us if there was any further up--which of course there was.

I have emailed the SCDOT and the SC Depart of Tourism to complain about the poor planning involved in the construction project.

It was a awful way to end a wonderful vacation.

Interesting. We just got home today. Had no problems at all going thru SC, but got stuck in heavy congestion in both Florida and Georgia. At one point we were out in the middle of nowhere in Georgia and at a dead stop in a construction zone. The funny thing was in both places we never really saw any construction being done, just traffic cones and traffic being narrowed down from 3 lanes to 2.

It seems like some portion of I-95 is always under construction -- either in Florida, Georgia or South Carolina. We always hit several construction zones every time we drive down and back.

Though we take the I-75 route coming from Mississippi and not I-95 the situation described is the main reason why we have decided over the years to drive through the night and arrive the next morning. Listed here are the benefits we have found from doing this :

1. The obvious - very little traffic. One memorable example of a slowdown during day travel was a 30~45 minute delay above Gainesville. Some jerk who wanted to advertise his ultralight school was using a field beside the interstate as his "airport". People slowing down to gawk backed up traffic for miles .... made me want to shoot the sucker down.

2. We arrive about park opening. By the time we really feel sleepy it's usually about check-in time. We get our room, take a decent nap, and then hit the park for fireworks. Return to the room afterwards for a normal nights sleep and our bodies are completely back on track the next morning.

3. Since we don't leave till mid-afternoon we sleep in late the day we leave. Nice to start the vacation without the alarm! :thumbsup2

This is one reason why I like to fly down from Maryland.

It's nice to fly over brush fires as well. I'm sure that you road travelers have experienced those.
