We're planning on having our DS(then 10) in the Oceaneer Lab and getting the beeper. I thought I read that this beeper is signed out and stays with us for the week. Can he stay in the room to sleep/watch tv while us big kids go dancing? Can the beeper be used in this situation?

The beeper is assigned to the parents in order for the clubs to page them if they are needed back to attend to or pickup their children. It cannot be used by the child in the stateroom to page the parents.

so only one beeper leaves the lab? what if child has ability to sign himself out of lab? he doesnt take a beeper with him?

Here is how it worked on our cruise with DD 9 who had sign in & out privileges. We were assigned a beeper which we kept with us. The lab paged us once to let us know that DD had checked out and was headed for the room. They didn't page us the next night when DD decided to check herself out (with a friend) and pretend to be an elevator operator the mid-ship elevators. I was not pleased when I went to pick her up and didn't find her. I think they will page if the child (with check out procedures) request a page. The child can not page.

We have 2 way radios in which DH and I use to keep track of each other while on the ship and in the parks.

If you give your child sign out privileges, they will be able to come and go without a parent being notified. If you do not assign this privilege they will page you if your child wants to leave and request you sign them out. Personally, I would only assign the self check out privilege if you are very confident with allowing your child the freedom to roam the ship alone. Much the same as if you would allow your child to access and roam the local mall alone. Different children have varying degrees of independence and only you can judge for your child what is best for him/her. :)

We let our ten year old have sign out priviledges, though I vaguely remember that we didn't have much of a choice, that's the way it was for that age. I'm sure if I had pushed the issue, they would have paged me everytime he wanted to leave.

My nine year old was not suppose to have sign out priviledges, though a couple of times he was ''allowed' out. He's learning disabled, and I was nervous about him finding his way back to the cabin or to other parts of the ship. A couple of times they did call the cabin to make sure he had gotten there ok, which was really nice of them.

When we cruised in January 2001 with our then 10 year old DD, we had the option to give her sign-out privledges or not. On our November 2001 cruise we were told that all of the 10-12's now were able to sign in-out themselves. I did not want my DD walking the ship alone so I told her to have me paged when she wanted to leave and I met her right outside the Lab. This worked out well for us. Nasi

your child can go to the kids club and they will page you for them if your child is not signed in at that time.

All 10 to 12 year olds can sign themselves out??? Say it isn't so. I want to be the one to make that decision. Any other input from recent cruisers regarding sign in-sign out of 10-12 yr olds?

The beeper is for the PARENTS, not the kid. The lab gives the beeper to the parents to page them if the kid needs the parents. There wouldn't be any reason for the lab to page the kid, so the beeper isn't issued to the kid. If the kid signs himself out, he's on his own, and the lab has no responsibility for him.

Thanks everyone - DS does have a good head on his shoulders so he should be fine. We may give him signing out priviledges once he knows the ship but still have the Lab contact us to let us know he is leaving and on his way to whereever. And yes, we do have the 2-way radios. Just wasnt sure if they could be used on the ship.
