Do I really have to have an picture ID for DS6 with Autism along with letter from Doctor to get GAC? Or to even have him board the flight?

Can I just make him one? (I was told he needed a picture ID)

Our kids did not need a photo ID to board the plane. I don't believe you need anything to get a GAC. Just go to Guest Relations and explain what your son needs.

Who told you he needed a picture ID? He doesn't for either thing. Only adults need the picture IDs for flights, and there are even ways around that, apparently.

I've flown a dozen times with DS, 5, and no one has ever asked for ID.

See that is what I was thinking-

Well I called AA and customer service told me make sure you have his picture ID with you along with the letter for Doctor--- I just wanted to make sure I wasnt going Crazy-

He is 6 and he has a school ID but what it that going to do for anyone.

THANKS for confirming that I am NOT Crazy. LOL

I will take a copy of birth certificate/SScard/ Insurance cards or something like that in case of emergency.

Our son is Autistic and we have never needed photo's for these, his passport details suffice.

We have had GAC passes several times and never as yet needed to provide photos or medical documents.

Just agreeing with the others. The person from AAA is not correct.

If you haven't already, check out the disABILITIES FAQs thread. There is a section about GACs (Guest Assistance Cards). If you feelmmkore confident asking for a GAC with a doctor's letter in hand, feel free to bring one. But, you don't need one and if you do bring one, the CMs may not want to look at it at all.

You won't need picture ID for anything. We've gotten a GAC for many years for youngest DD and no proof of ID was needed.
You also don't need any ID to get thru airport security for anyone under the age of 18. My oldest DD gets perturbed because she looks young even though she is over 18 and they usually say, "that's OK dearie. We only need to see ID for the adults."
(Of course, if you are traveling from outside the US, you would need a passport for your DS even if he is under 18).

We are in Texas- so I dont have a passport for any of us.

I thought the Customer Service lady was crazy- Thanks for confirming- That is one less thing I have to do before the trip.

See why I come to the DISBOARDS with all the question- :disrocks: :thanks:

I have always borrowed my son's school id to take with us, just in case. I never needed it, but I had it anyway to board the airplane after 9/11.

If you did need a picture ID, the school ID should work. It would be issued by a government agency (if it's a public school) and most schools require a birth certificate when the child is first enrolled.
