Do I really need an GAC?

I have been to WDW twice before and just told the CM I'm partially deaf and need captions, without a GAC.

This time round it's a bit different as I will have to use an ECV due to foot problems. Do I really need a GAC or will I be OK just telling the CM I'm deaf too?

What do you think?

Also, if I do need a GAC, where do I get it, how do I get it, and do I need one for each park?

Thanks a bunch! :D

Talking Hands is our expert for the question about whether you would need a GAC or not for your type of situation.

I can tell you how and where to request one. Just having the ecv will allow you to use the wheelchair accessible entrances without having a GAC (since the CMs can see the ecv, they know that you need that without having a GAC). For invisible disabilities or needs for assistance, a GAC is often helpful.

You can go to Guest Services in any of the parks to request a GAC. The person with a disability needs to go in person and (or have someone in their party) explain their needs to the CM. They don't need a doctor's letter or anything else; just you and your ability to tell them what your needs are. The same GAC is good for all the parks; you don't need to get a new one at each park. It's usualy issued for up to 6 people and is usually good for your entire length of stay. Another suggestion I have is to readd the GAC over before you leave. On one trip, we were told one thing, but when we went to use the GAC, we found it said something entirely different. On our last trip, my DH and DD went to get the GAC and when I looked at it later, it had someone else's name on it. That was at MK and they were putting the info into a computer and then printing it out in another room. They apparently grabbed the wrong one to hand to my DH. So, check the GAC over before you leave Guest Services.

I have found that with the wheelchair CM often so that and ignore any other disabilities. I have in the past been told they cannot accommodate both. "Sorry ECVs go to the back" I would insist on a GAC although they will tell you it is not needed just inform the CM. Well often they see the ECV and point you to a spot and that's it. Indiana Jones is good example. ECV seating is in the back but seating for the interpreting is in the front. They always try to seat me in the back until I refuse and insist on going to the front and show the card. I've also been refused reflective captioning for the same reason. ECVs in the back, RC in the front. Also you will find that they will let a regular wheelchair go to the front handicapped area and keep the powered ECVs in the back. You will definitely have to assert yourself whatever you do. Also let them know if you can transfer to a regular seat. If you can that helps.

Thanks Sue and Lisa :D

Lisa - I have no problem sitting in a normal seat, so that should solve the problem with the reflective captions!

It sounds as though this trip is certainly going to be a stress-filled eye-opener!

I guess I will do or die! ;)

Just be proactive and insist that they accommodate bith things and not just the mobility issue.

Mazzy, try not to let the trip be stressful for you. You will be on holiday & have looked forward to it for awhile :). I agree that sometimes people with disabilities have to be proactive, but the trip does not have to be stressful. Just be sure to let the CM know about your hearing issues since they will already (hopefully) have noticed your mobility issue.

Sometimes I do not think the "average" person understands &/or realizes another person's disability &/or limitations. I go places at home sometimes with a friend who uses a wheelchair most of the time. It is amazing that people see us & think we can get by (I try to push the wheelchair as often as possible).

bottom line - enjoy YOUR holiday!!

Mazzy,
I just noticed your countdown! I'm so jealous! Here's some PD for a great stressfree trip.

Thanks Judith, yes, I know I should be thinking along the lines of relax and enjoy but it is stressing me out a bit! I guess it's a case of fear of the unknown, hopefully once I have used the scooter I will feel OK. Yes we have waited a long, long time for this trip, having had to cancel the last two due to my health problems, which were Xmas/New Year 2001 and Xmas/New Year 2002 - didn't want to chance Xmas again, hence the trip in September.

The children don't know yet and we won't tell them until a couple of days before - and as they are off school at the moment I am becoming very devious at hiding stuff!

Nanajo1 - Thanks for the PD, I hope to report nothing but good news on our return! ;)

Mazzy ~

How abut this. Get all your stressing, planning, worrying, fretting etc. done right now before you go. Obsess over every little detail and get it out of your system. Then when you leave, leave the worry behind too. You've done all you can do and you WILL have a fabulous time. The CM "see" the situation one way. Just be prepared to reframe their reality and most will pleasantly try to accomodate you.

Sending loads and loads of PD to you.

I like that idea - "to reframe their reality." Of course, that applies to more than just CMs - the public in general. My friend who uses the wheelchair is currently in the hospital in very serious condition. However, the good news is she is now "awake," no longer has any tubes in her mouth & ate real food yesterday. I wil lhave to share this phrase with her - she will really appreciate it. Thank you - you didn't know when you wrote that how much you will make a stranger's day!
