Do I really need a home phone?

I just realized I'm paying close to $40 every month for my home phone. Even though I rarely make any local or long distant call. Should I keep it? Both me and DH both have cells, and our internet connect is through cable modem. Seem really stupid to waste $480 a year on something I don't use. I could use that $$ to fly down to WDW. :)

Pros and cons?

No you don't need it then.
My DS got rid of his....and so did a friend of mine. Seems to work just fine for them.
Wish I could....but no cell reception here and no cable available :(

I probably wouldn't have one if I was less settled. Since I have a family and own our home I don't think I would want not to have a regular line. If I was in apartments or renting I think it would be a good idea not to have one, I remember paying way too much for activation etc.

In our old house we had 2 lines but only moved one, we use DSL for the computers and both have cell phones so didn't need 2. My DH said something about when our girls get older but I'll get them a cell when they are old enough to need their own phone line.

We have several freinds who opted not to have a home phone and go with their cells.... They seem to like it, and it cost them less to set up a cell phone than a land line which often requires a deposit.

I keep toying with the idea of just using our cell phones but I prefer to keep our land line....... DH gets soooooo many phone calls that his phone would always need to be charged..... this way he can use the upstairs phone until it needs charging, then he switches to the downstairs phone, and then his cell... (of course this only happens when it is the sweet sixteen or other long football/basketball day! LOL)

I was talking to my Brother recently and he said the only reason he has a home phone is that he can't get a cable modem yet in his area and has DSL instead. Both he and his SO have cells and he never gives out the home number. They just leave the ringer off because they know only telemarketers will be calling on it. As soon as cable modems come into his area he is getting rid of it.

My home is down in a valley like and the cell phone is hit or miss. Otherwise, I would consider it.

I just had this discussion with some friends the other day and mentioned that if I were single, had no kids, I definitely would not have a home phone line. There would be no need.

We keep our landline phone so that we don't have to take the cell phone around with us as we move around the house. It might work with a ranch-style house, but ours is 2 story.

My DH's good friend lives alone. When he moves, he is going to drop his reg phone and use his cell. He is looking into something that you can drop your cell into and it operates your home's phones off your cell when you are home. Anyone ever hear of that? I'll try to find out more if anyone is interested.
