My flight arrives at 11 am. Do I need to let AKL know that we will be there before the 3pm check in time? Should I call? And if a room isn't available, will they be able to hold onto our luggage until one is, so we can head to the parks?
You don't need to let them know you'll arrive before check-in time (which is after, not at, 3, by the way).
If your room isn't ready, Bell Services will hold your luggage until you're in your room and call for it.
You don't NEED to let them know. You can arrive and check-in anytime after 6AM. You will receive your packet which will include your KTTW. The KTTW will be your room key, park tickets and dining credits if on the dining plan.
Once you receive that, you are free to use all the ammenities at AKL and head to the parks. Bell services will hold your luggage for you until your room is ready. They will text you your room number when the room is ready. When you get back to your room, call Bell Services and they will bring your luggage up to you.
At the 10 day mark prior to your arrival, you can do online check-in. With online check-in, you tell them what time you expect to arrive at AKL. That may increase you chances of your room being ready when you arrive.
As the PPs have stated no, you do not need to let them know you will be checking in early. Now checking in late on the other hand, you should give them a heads up. One trip we checked in at 11pm and our reservations were a mess. The CM suggested letting them know next time if we are going to be checking in that late.
So, we are arriving early...luggage gets stored...what about carry-on luggage that we will have meds and computers in? Do you think it would be safe to leave? Do they keep all bags in a big room? Are they checked like a "coat check"? Should we just haul the carry-on to the park we go to that first day and rent a locker?

they tag your bags and there's always an attendant at the storage area. You have to have a claim ticket type thing to get your bags so not just anybody will have access to your stuff
