So, I agreed to watch my husband's friend's kid this afternoon/evening while the guys go to a ballgame in a city a few hours drive away. So, I'm looking at about 8 hours with her. She's 6,the same age as my oldest and they get along fine. However, I was thinking about taking the kids to the children's museum (8 hours is too long to pass in the playroom and with DVDs). So, do I need to get a permission slip from her dad in order to take her?

In case you're wondering why her mom doesn't watch her. Her parents are divorced, she lives full-time with her dad and her mom has her every other weekend (and from my observations, that seems like plenty for her - whenever it's not her weekend and the guys want to do a ballgame, I end up watching the kid, she never wants her for the extra time. It's just usually not for 8 hours straight!). This is not her mom's weeekend...

I don't think you need a permission slip, but maybe call the dad to make sure it's okay. It doesn't sound like a big deal (as long as we're not talking a major road trip).

It's not a big rode trip; the children's museum is only about 10 miles away from my house.

No, you won't need a permission slip. I take friends' kids places all the time (and vice versa) and we never exchange permission slips. The one exception was when I took friends to DL, the parents sent along a power of attorney in case of injury.

Id say it really depends, if this is a common occurance do you take her out often? I usually procure a permission slip if im taking my younger sisters friends any where because Im usualy not familiar with the families mostly its so I can take them to a hospital in the event of an emergency or if the parent suddenly forgets I was suppose to have them and call the police claiming a kidnapping I have written proof other wise. It sounds like your familiar with the family though so it would probably be fine if you just verbally asked the dad.
