Do I have this 7 month thing right?

I knew when I bought my points last fall that in a couple of years I would probably want more points and probably at a different resort to vary our vacations. So my thought is to try out different DVC properties for a couple of days each vacation to determine where to add on.
I currently have 10 nights reserved at my home resort (AKV) I would like to change the first 3 nights to another resort at my 7 month window - which will open up in a couple of days. I don't have enough points to make the 3 day reservation while keeping the 10 day reservation unless I borrow. I'd rather not borrow.
If I try to do this online @ 8 am eastern (5 am my time,) would I need to cancel 3 days @ AKV first to have the points available to book those 3 days at the new resort? Do I understand this correctly? Will I have to cancel the whole 10 days, book 3 at the new resort and then re-book the 7 at AKV - or can I just cancel the first 3 days of the 10 days I have and then book the 3 at the new resort?
How great is the risk of losing anything I see as available when the web booking opens if I wait 1 hr. until the phone lines open to do this via MS?
I'm looking at BWV and BC specifically as the 3 day replacement options.

The only way to change a reservation online is to cancel the entire reservation and start over and hope that anything you want will still be available. Since the time you are talking about includes end of Dec and NYE, an extremely high DVC demand time, you would be committing reservation suicide by attempting to first cancel current trip on-line and then trying to reserve three nights at a new resort and then 7 at AKV. If you want to change the first three nights of the trip to another resort, you should wait until 9 a.m. and call Member Services to do it. MS can make that change if the other resort is open without cancelling the remaining 7 nights of your AKV reservation and by using the points for the first three nights on the new reservation. Also if you need extra points, you can purchase up to 24 one-time use points if you do the change by calling MS but you cannot purchase those points doing the reservation on-line.

Thank you, I'll just sleep an extra hour, then . I'm actually looking at 1/1, 1/2, and 1/3, and 1/1 @ least is pretty booked everywhere. My villa @ AKV currently shows as unavailable 1/8 & 1/9, so I better not cancel the 10 day reservation, best to call. Maybe if 1/1, 1/2, and 1/3 don't work, I'll try for a different resort for the last 3 nights of the vacation instead.

I had booked 4 nights at OKW for after our Disney Wonder Cruise. Today was the 7 month window and was pleasantly surprised that the VGF were available for the same four days. So I cancelled our OKW on line and booked our first stay at VGF. I am so excited to stay there. I happened to be in Orlando on business in October and just happened into going to the VGF Grand Opening ceremony. It is a beautiful resort and I can't wait to see it all decked out for Christmas.
