Do I correct the teacher?

Some people just aren't great spellers. From working with kids, I believe you either have that skill naturally, or have to really work at it. It does not reflect on intelligence. I can look at a word and tell if it's spelled correctly, even if I've never seen it before. And, the quote you mentioned is one reason I will never have students, or parents of students as "friends" on FB. Most of the time, I am in a hurry when I post there and I don't care much about typos, grammar, etc. I would hate for something I wrote to be gossiped about or posted on a message board for strangers to see. I would really hate to think one of my relatives or real friends would do that.

Not saying the OP should not correct the teacher. I think she should do so in a respectful way.

BTW, I am assuming you meant fourth grade? Sorry, it is hard to resist on a thread about spelling:rotfl:.

I did mean FOURTH grade but then I am not a teacher nor do I play one on a message board. If I were a teacher I would be sure that I knew how to spell the words that I required my students to spell.
With regard to her FB page, she really should limit who has access to it but she doesn't. Its wide open, which isn't a good thing. Is it fair to hold teachers to a higher standard of literacy? Yes!I wasn't the only one that noticed the typos and errors. There were lots of humorous comments. :lmao:

But do you know your relative is giving the students spelling words and counting right answers wrong? Misspelling something on FB is much different than what the OP is talking about. If a teacher spells something wrong that affects your child's grade, you should definitely let her know. OTOH, if a teacher misspells something in a note or email, I don't think it is appropriate to point it out. And I don't think a teacher posting on FB should be expected to have correct spelling, grammar etc. Don't we all speak differently when we answer the phone at work than when we are talking with friends? To me, it's the same thing. Teachers should be held to a higher standard when it comes to their teaching, but in their regular lives, I don't think the same rules apply.

:thumbsup2 This. I would hate for my son or daughter to insist that a word (like "trugged" or "dinning" which should have been on a spelling list) is spelled correctly because "Mrs. Jones" said so.

Agreed. I am a terrible speller. When I write on a message board I don't really care about spelling/grammatical errors (except my pet peeves of grocer's apostrophes and their/there/they're). I don't expect teachers to monitor their FB or board usage as carefully as their assignments. However, I was furious when DD brought home a vocabulary sheet with an incorrect definition. Notes and emails home fall into a gray area for me. I expect a teacher to proofread anything that gets sent home, but I certainly wouldn't make a fuss if there was an error in a home mailing.
