Do graveyards scare you?

No, they dont scare me. I just feel like I should be very respectful when I am in one. If you enjoy doing this, by all means you should not feel bad about doing it. You are preserving history in your own way.

Now my DD(4), thinks Scooby Doo lives in EVERY cemetary. LOL

I like to walk around in cemeteries and read the gravestones. I have taken pictures of gravestones but only of relatives for my family history records.

I find graveyards to be very peaceful. I don't think I would want to be there at night, not that the graveyard would freak me out but I am afraid of the dark!

Personally, I think your coworkers are rude and out of their minds.

I enjoy graveyards as well and have no problem with people wanting to explore, etc. as long as they do it with a respectful attitude.

My pet peeve is anyone who walks across a grave. Not that I think it is going to bother the occupant, but it is a matter of respect.

Mine is people who litter in graveyards. Chris and I pick up a lot of trash when we walk through the one I photographed. It just blows my mind how anyone can leave their trash on someone's grave...

I too love old graveyards and cemetaries. In fact when i was a toddler I actually lived in a house at Laurel Hill Cemetary in East Falls, Philly. My GD was caretaker there for decades and my dad spent his entire childhood living at the same cemetary. There are very cool headstones and statuary there. Tons of history in the cemetary.

Being afraid of graveyards and such is actually a late 20th century phenomenom. My dad has newspaper stories that had interviews with my GD and he used to tell the papers how cemetaries were popular sites for family get-togethers and picnics back in the 19th and early 20th centuries. People used to come and stay for hours.

Now its all solemn and different. Not many ppl today would wanna picnic among the dead these days.

I just have a smal word of advice for the OP though. When I visited New Mexico a few years ago I went to Acoma Sky Pueblo, and they had a lovely little cemetary. We were not allowed to take pictures though because the tribe believed that this disturbed the ppl resting in the graves. So if you ever go to a tribal cemetary you should find out how they view pictures of the graves first. You always wanna respect local customs.

I think its simply finding beauty in what most people overlook or ignore everyday, kind of like the eldrely in this country. Maybe theres a connection there?

One of my favorite photos is of my 87 yo grandmother smiling at my brothers wedding just a few months ago. The photo is beautiful.

Oh my, I've always loved walking around old cemeteries and searching for really old toombstones. That must be so interesting to photograph them. I also know of an artist who does really moving oil paintings of cemeteries too.

No, they don't bother me at all. I used to live(my mom still does) on a very quiet residential street. There is a grave yard on this street. As kids, we would go up there all the time. We would watch the workmen lower and bury the caskets after the people left. There was even a baseball field and a park next to it.

Well, no, not during the daytime. But yes, sometimes graveyards to scare me a little bit. Childish I know but for pete's sake, you're standing on dead people! I think it is a place to honor lost loved ones. No, I don't think that your pictures are bad because they are pictures of headstones. Actually I think it's kind of neat! Don't listen to what other people say! As long as you like it, then keep doing it!

I think perhaps your co-workers fear their own mortality. At least that's what I always figured about people who were spooked about that stuff...like they don't want to confront death or something...

But, no, they don't spook me out. I've even taken my platoon by them for graveyard PT! Not in the graveyard mind you, but in front of it. Then, I had them run by Emily Bronte's old house and graveyard last Halloween for our halloween run! You should come to England...tons of nice graveyards here.

By the way....I still think EsmeraldaX is totally CUTE!!

You are "allowed" to do whatever you want. Apparently you were offended for whatever reason.

I personally find it more respectful to view a headstone from between graves or at the foot of one instead of walking on top of it, but whatever works for you....

I don't mind walking through cemetaries at all. My DH and I did a lot of that when we were researching for his genealogy.

My town has a very old cemetary, there is a legend that when you walk under the arches to enter, if dew drops on you, you will be the next one laid to rest in the cemetary!! LOL

Every year my town, New Bern, NC, has a "ghost walk" around Halloween. The local theater group gets together and comes up with skits to do at different locations (like the Cedar Grove cemetary and very old houses downtown). They are supposed to be the ghosts of the people who really lived here during a certain era(every year is a different era) It is really fun being able to walk around at night, even in the cemetary, and getting "spooked"!

Absolutely not. I LOVE cemeteries. I often walk my dog through them just to be there. Not all cemeteries welcome dogs, but the biggest and best one around here does, so I'm happy.

Graveyards don't bother me at all. I live across the street from one...Revolutionary War era to the present. I actually find them peaceful in many ways, and a good way to gain perspective. Ialways think that all the people lying there thought every little thing in their lives was so important when it was happening to them, and yet here they are, many years later, long ogne, and the world goes on.

Puts me in my place when I am feeling a little too "it's all about me".
