As a DVC renter am I eligible for the DVC dining and shopping discounts while I am renting?

Thanks!

You are not entitled to any of the DVC perks and discounts, but they may be extended to you as your room key card will say DVC Member on the bottom of it. Whether you take advantage of those perks is between you and your conscience. Also keep in mind that a restaurant or store may ask for your blue membership card if they want, and you wouldn't have that.

Re-reading that, I'm sure it strikes you as harsh. Not intended that way...as someone renting points all you really are eligible for is to stay in the DVC accommodaton that is reserved for you.

No. They are perks for members.
In the past, if you had a room card that had DVC member on it (which you would because you are staying on points), that was all you needed to get the discounts. On our last 2 trips (March and October), the CM also wanted to see our DVC Membership card (which only members have).

Dining and shopping discounts...yes, in all likelihood. Your room keys will most likely have "DVC Member" printed on them. That is normally sufficient to obtain those lower level discounts.

Other perks like the Annual Pass discount or the DVC golf membership are more aggressively policed. A member is usually asked to present his/her blue membership ID card in order to take advantage of those perks. You obviously don't have an acutal member ID card.

EDIT: According to the perks page on the DVC members-only website, presentation of the blue member ID and/or the room key is sufficient for most DVC discounts. IMO, if Disney really wanted to limit the perks to members only, it would be very simple to do: require the blue ID for all perks. So far it doesn't appear they have made such a stipulation.

Like many things at WDW, CMs will be inconsistent across the board. I am certain the stories of some CMs asking for the blue ID are true. Others will not. But it wouldn't hurt to flash your room key when paying and see if they will apply the discount on that basis.

We had to show our value membership card to get the discount at Chefs De France last August. The room key was not sufficient. We were also asked for the blue membership card AND the room key when we pool-hopped.

I, personally, would not try to use member discounts because of the potential awkwardness of being asked for a membership card I did not have.

You are not eligible for DVC member perks.

You are eligible for all WDW resort guest perks, such as free parking at the theme parks.

Thank you all for clearing this up for me. I am a BIG dis fan and have no intention of cheating the system. I was hoping that I was "leagally" eligible for the restaurant discounts as feeding a family of 4 is expensive and I could use all the help I can get! I totally get now that these perks are for members only. :thumbsup2 pixiedust:
