Do Cell Phones Work?

We learned about a family emergency as the Wonder was literally pulling away at PC. My Nextel worked well into evening - at least until 8 p.m. After that we had no service until we approached PC early Sunday morning. We made a few ship to shore calls from the Ship, but so far, haven't been billed for them. I keep expecting to see them show up on our credit card.

If you bring a laptop for whatever reason (we bring ours for the kids to play games, watch movies, etc. on the plane), you can purchase some wireless internet time and use Skype or another VOIP provider to make cheap calls home. Can be trickey to receive calls since you have to be connected when the call comes in, but for outgoing calls, I am guessing this will work fine. At least I hope it does when we are on the Magic in a couple of weeks from now!

I was doing some research on this too, from what I have read St. thomas uses Sprint as their primary cell carrier, SO we should be able to get service that is not international, doubt we will try, but wanted to make sure there was a way. You can always leave the Ship to shore # with a family member in case of emergency, I plan to do that also. I will def leave the phone away except when in St. Thomas just in case LOL...

I work for Sprint and can confirm that we have service in St Thomas, St Croix, and St John. The Virgin Islands are served by our Pureto Rico market.

I have a Blackberry phone with tri-band GSM and could not get the thing to work at any of the Western stops last year. Here's hoping that I can get luck on the Eastern this year.

I'll have my laptop, so Skype is always an option as well.
