DME: How long did it take before you got your luggage?

How long did it take to receive your luggage after you checked into your resort?

  • It was waiting in my room already!

  • I received my luggage within 1 hour.

  • I received my luggage between 1 to 2 hours.

  • I received my luggage between 2 to 3 hours.

  • Ack...what happened? It took longer than 3 hours to receive my luggage.

For all of you that has used DME, how long did it take before your luggage was delivered to your room after you checked in?

I have opted for the multiple choice poll for those of you that have used DME more than once.


I guess I messed up on the poll. I should have added one more stating if you went to the parks and found your bags waiting for you. Sorry. Just use ... "bags waiting in my room already" since it probably didn't really make too much a difference to you then!
 
It was sitting in our room when we opened the door.
 
Depends on what you mean when you say 'sitting in your room'. I usually just head out to a park, so when I get to my room, my bags were there. Now, they could have just been delivered, or they could have been there within 10 minutes of my first arrival.
I have had them delivered to my room, at BWV, 15 minutes after I was able to get into my room. If you can't get into your room, they can't deliver the bags to you.
 
We went last September and it took 6 hours to get our luggage. I don't know if this was due to DME or Pop Century. But, it did all get there. We went to MK for most of that time.
 

So far we have only used DME once. It was an early morning flight and we were in WDW by 10 a.m. We went to the parks immediately and didn't get back to the room until that night. The bags were there, but I have no clue what time they arrived. Our upcoming trip is a later flight and I'm hoping we get the bags quickly.

I put it was in my room when I got there, but (except for one occasion) have never gone to my room till many many hours later that evening. So I have no clue what time it showed up.

The one time I waited on my luggage (this was after midnite at Ft. Wilderness), it arrived at the Outpost about 15 minutes after I finished my checkin process. They took me and my luggage to my site at the same time.

There are two problems with this poll:
  1. Some arriving guests can go to their room immediately, because they arrived after the afternoon check-in time or because they were lucky that their assigned room had already been cleaned. Other arriving guests need to wait for their room to be ready. The poll does not reflect this.
  2. Because guests don't have to wait in their room for luggage to be delivered, many guests will have no idea how long it really took. For example, when we checked in for our October 2006 stay... we went to our room, left after an hour or so, and had a leisurely dinner with friends; when we returned to the room, our luggage was there. Did it take 2 hours or 5 hours? I don't know, and it really doesn't matter.
I think the best feature of DME is being able to bypass baggage claim and not having to handle your checked luggage after you check it at your home airport. You don't even have to be in your room when the luggage is delivered because Disney covers the inbound gratuity if you use DME luggage transfers as designed. Also, by bypassing baggage claim, you'll be on an earlier DME coach to your resort.

However, it's logical that it takes luggage longer than it takes people to arrive in the room. The bags require unloading, sorting, and other processing at several steps; the resort bellmen are busy, and can not necessarily deliver all bags the moment the DME luggage truck arrives at the resort.

While I know I cannot account for the first of the problems you listed, I did account for the 2nd. Did you read my post first or just vote on the poll?

I didn't vote at all -- because the poll choices don't match real-life situations.

How should someone vote whose room is not ready until four hours after checking in? That's not unusual when people check in before noon.

And voting "bags waiting in my room already" sends the wrong message to people who only look at the poll results. It's pretty much impossible for bags to beat guests to their room, if the guests take a DME motorcoach right after landing and their room is ready at check-in.

The important point is the nobody has to wait in their room for luggage. Just take a carry-on with anything that is needed right away; then, after checking in at the resort, go out and have fun. The bags will be delivered while you're out, with Disney paying the inbound luggage delivery tip.

Granted, the poll is not perfect. However, if you are checking in and your room is not ready, your luggage would never be delivered to you before unless you get them yourselves and lug them around. Therefore, using DME, when you do enter your room, will your bags be there or not?

I should have known there would be a debate...
 
We arrived at POP about 9pm and our bags were delivered about 10:45pm, so almost 2 hours.
 
This raises a question for me - if we're in the room when the bags are delivered, should we tip like a normal bellhop? Or is it DME that delivers and no tip is expected?

I asked this on another thread and was told that you do not need to tip if you are utilizing DME. If you collect your own luggage from the airport while using DME then you should tip.

I asked this question because I didn't want to seem like a cheapskate but was assured that DME bellhops are compensated appropriately.
 
We always take the earliest flight and check in around 9-10am, using DME from MCO. We don't go to the room until sometime in the late afternoon. Our luggage has always been there.:thumbsup2
 
No tip is expected for baggage delivery (to the hotel from the airport) via DME. You should do all normal tipping for baggage for your journey home.
