That night, we had dinner reservations at 7:00 at the Flying Fish, which is on the Boardwalk. We arrived a few minutes early and were given a beeper that worked throughout the Boardwalk area. It was nice to spend some time browsing in the shops and taking in the atmosphere.
Before we left there was a thread about what to wear to Signature restaurants. There were a variety of opinions ranging from "you're at a theme park, wear shorts and a tee shirt" to "dress up". We are not generally comfortable going into a nicer restaurant dressed down, so DH wore khakis/polo shirt/dress shoes, I wore a capri outfit, and DD wore a sundress. I will say that I was happy we did. There was no one in the restaurant actually wearing a tee shirt and shorts. Most people were dressed just like we were.
We were seated shortly after 7:00 and loved the decor of the restaurant. I don't remember our waiter's name, but he was very very good. He offered us still or carbonated water. I wanted carbonated and DH and DD wanted still. So, he brought us 1 bottle of Evian and 1 bottle of S. Pellegrino. Nice!
I ordered a Merlot flight, but it doesn't look like I took a picture. I am not a wine expert nor am I even minimally knowledgeable. But, I do like to get a flight when they are available because it lets me taste a variety of wines and I can learn what I like. Whether it went with my meal or not, I do not know. But it was good!
For appetizers, I had the cheese platter. I did not write down the kinds of cheese, but suffice to say they were all delicious. I think this was the place that had a Stilton that was amazing. (Five tasting portions - Raisins On The Vine, Spanish Membrillo, Honeycomb, Dried cranberry-sweet onion-golden apple compote $16.00) Here's what was left..
DH had his favorite, the calamari. He liked the seasoning a lot. (spiced green papaya, Wakame and Vegetables with Asian dipping sauce $14.00)
DD had the crabcake. She proclaimed it wonderful, and I agreed when I stole a bite. (savory vegetable slaw, roasted red pepper coulis, ancho chili remoulade $16.00)
I was disappointed to find the "surf and surf" as listed on several online menus was not available. Instead, DH and I both ordered the scallops. (English Pea, Pecorino, Basil and Mascarpone-laced Risotto di Carnarolli, Prosciutto di Parma Cracklins $36.00) This dish was absolutely amazing. The scallops were melt in your mouth tender. I love all seafood, but scallops are not my favorite. This dish, however, really brought them up toward the top of my list.
DD had the restaurant's signature dish, the potato wrapped red snapper. Creamy Leek Fondue, veal glace, and Red Wine and Cassis Butter Sauce $36.00) It tasted like a thin, crispy potato chipped wrapped around a delicious fish. Oh my!! SOooo good!!
For dessert, I decided to go with sometime lighter and ordered the trip of sorbet. (guava, mango-citrus and cassis with fresh berries and vanilla-laced butter cookies $7.00) I thought they were just OK and not sweet enough for my taste. Actually, I found it to be a bit of a disappointing ending to an amazing meal.
DH had the gingersnap crusted apple tart (Almond cream, morello cherry coulis, cinnamon anglaise, maple tuile and rum raisin ice cream $8.00) He never met an apple tart he did not like, and this one was no exception.
DD ordered a white chocolate creme brulee. Now, why I didn't order this, I do not know. I am the biggest creme brulee fan there is. But, I knew I'd have a few this week and was trying to end the meal on a light note. MISTAKE!! The creme brulee was so delicious I had to steal about 1/2 of it from DD.
As I mentioned the service was excellent at the Flying Fish. I guess it should be for what ended up being about a $275 meal before tip. It took the better part of two hours, but we all enjoy spending time dining together and really enjoying our food. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant and will certainly go again!
