Does not surprise me at ALL. I took my boys to the mall today and after about five minutes on the freeway I was regretting the decision. I have never experienced rain this hard in CA in over fifteen years of living here. The visibility was zero. Extremely windy and raining in sheets. I was at DLR yesteday before the rain started. Today I was feeling REALLY sorry for anyone whose vacation to Disneyland is this week.

You guys need to come to Vancouver for a few weeks! This is the first sunny day we have had in about 2.5 months - straight rain!
I kinda laugh when CA shuts down over a bit of rain (ok a LOT of rain, but still). lol.

In 2006 (I think?) my daughter and I braved 4 or 5 days of rain in January at DL. I guess it was odd for locals because it wasn't what you are used to. It sucked for us because we were trying to LEAVE the rain. But one plus was the parks were empty! We rode everything just walking on, over and over!

Somehow I don't think us feeling sorry for them will help at all. :sad1: I lived in south Florida for 6 years and Washington (state) for one before moving here to San Diego so this is nothing for me, but it is definitely the most it's rained since I've lived here, and the wind is shaking my house! I volunteer on a whale-watching boat and our trips were cancelled today and likely will be throughout the week. I will hope for everyone that the rains become at least manageable for your trips!!! :umbrella:

I'm going to guess you've never been to Nor Cal during the rainy season? LOL Sorry your day was rainy, I hope it's better soon. :goodvibes

Ummm, not all of CA shuts down for rain, just down south. And that's only because it rarely rains there at all. But up here in the Northern half of the state we get rain all the time, life continues as usual here. :) No shutting down in sight for us. :thumbsup2

It was NUTS here! And they (weather people) said it was going to rain for the whole week. But the clouds parted and there was sun! Last time I was at DLR it was CRAZY rain but it was empty :)! Early stinks...but maybe people will get to everything because of the rain and less people!

They might have to drain ROA again!!!! HA HA

I am the very first to admit that we are a bit whimpy when it comes to rain in So. Cal., but today was unbelievable. It was like Portland, OR rain today. It just poured and poured - really strong and constant. So much so that I have several calls out to various repair people to fix some damage to the house from today's rain. It was REALLY bad today.

Also living in the desert, I understand the issues with heavy rains (which are heading over here, btw) - yes it does indeed rain, really rain, all year up the northern coast - Vancouver, Seattle, etc - however, the land there is softer and absorbs water (much of it), and there is vegetation that takes in a good deal of water as well. Of course driving in the rain and getting around is very familiar to the northeasterners and they are experts at it!

In the desert, the ground is very hard, some of it is caliche, and the water just rushes around, trying to find someplace to go, causing terrible, fast floods (called flash floods) that can quickly rise to several feet of fast moving water, with no warning, and rush across streets and highways that are bone dry most of the time. Additionally, as mentioned above, early builders were not always forward looking about putting houses up on fragile mountains and so there are horrible mudslides - again made worse because there is not deep rooted vegetation to help hold the dirt in place.

Just posting this to make it more understandable why people in southern California feel concerned and negatively affected. :hippie:

It's not just rain, it's also been very windy. Anaheim had gusts of 80-90 miles an hour yesterday on top of the rain.

Living in the northwest we get an occasional deluge, but when I was in the Phillipines OMG. Be safe, it can get real bad on the freeways and the LA river must be a torrent.

I work for an oceanographic research organization. Several of our scientists work on understanding and predicting El Nino. We got an alert this past weekend from some of our collaborative scientists. It's too long to post in full, but here's some excerpts:

...a truly prodigious amount of snowfall is likely to occur in the mountains, possibly measured in the tens of feet in the Sierra after it's all said and done.

...Between this Sunday and the following Sunday, I expect categorical statewide rainfall totals in excess of 3-4 inches. That is likely to be a huge underestimate for most areas. Much of NorCal is likely to see 5-10 inches in the lowlands, with 10-20 inches in orographically-favored areas. Most of SoCal will see 3-6 inches at lower elevations, with perhaps triple that amount in favored areas.

...The models are virtually unanimous in "reloading" the powerful jet stream and forming an additional persistent kink 2000-3000 miles to our southwest after next Sunday. This is a truly ominous pattern, because it implies the potential for a strong Pineapple-type connection to develop. Indeed, the 12z GFS now shows copious warm rains falling between days 12 and 16 across the entire state.

...Normally, such as scenario out beyond day seven would be dubious at best. Since the models are in such truly remarkable agreement, however, and because of the extremely high potential impact of such an event, it's worth mentioning now. Since there will be a massive volume of freshly-fallen snow (even at relatively low elevations between 3000-5000 feet), even a moderately warm storm event would cause very serious flooding. This situation will have to monitored closely. Even if the tropical connection does not develop, expected rains in the coming 7-10 days will likely be sufficient to cause flooding in and of themselves (even in spite of dry antecedent conditions).

..In short, the next 2-3 weeks (at least) are likely to be more active across California than any other 2-3 week period in recent memory. The potential exists for a dangerous flood scenario to arise at some point during this interval, especially with the possibility of a heavy rain-on-snow event during late week 2. In some parts of Southern California, a whole season's worth of rain could fall over the course of 5-10 days. This is likely to be a rather memorable event. Stay tuned.

(Bold emphasis was mine). Get out your ponchos and galoshes.

Yes, we're having lovely weather up here in Seattle, too. Yesterday was Spring-like. So glad I'm heading to DL on Friday. :rolleyes1

I can handle the rain, just can't handle it if the park closes on me! Wellies are packed!

When S. CA gets rain N. UT gets snow so I don't feel bad for anybody :lmao: I was driving 40mph on the freeway this morning (I'm usually going 80mph)! UT doesn't shut down though ~ we can handle it.

It was really bad here too. Today is worse then yesterday. Sorry about your damages, I worry about that when it rains like this too. Add in the wind and it's crazy!!

Really? That's crazy, especially since our winds are supposed to be super low over the next week.......and even tho we had high winds yesterday I don't think they hit 80-90, I think we topped out around 60 mph yesterday. Hopefully it won't last too long. Our forecast has rain listed all week and thru the weekend, t-storms today and tomorrow. Drives the dogs INSANE!!!!

I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it on the Weather Channel! :)

Anaheim is about to dumped on right now!!

The HoJo webcam is down... or it's flooded (no pun intended) with people checking it out.

Thanks, this rain has created major headaches for us as homeowners.

As for the wind, it is pretty good. Mixed with the heavy rain, it's creating a sideways rain, which causes all sorts of unique issues... and headaches.

As I sit typing this, the rain is starting again. Fingers-crossed for the house.
