DLR after broken ankle

Hi all. I know everyone heals different but figured I'd ask. My husband will be two weeks post cast removal from a broken ankle during our trip. He thinks he will be fine to walk the 10 miles a day for 5 days that our trip will most likely require. I think this is going to be a disaster with a swollen and throbbing ankle. I would prefer to order a scooter to be delivered to our hotel for daily use.

Can we just park the scooter in stroller parking during the day so he can only use it when needed? Or I'm wondering if wheelchairs are available midday usually at the parks if he decides he needs one.

If we go with a scooter what is a good place to have one delivered?

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm assuming that walking all day would be a bit much on that fresh of a healed ankle. I would probably plan for midday resting at the hotel. Obviously he can play it by ear. Have fun either way!

We just ended up taking things slower and relaxing on benches, that was something I made him do because he refused the scooter. In the end his ankle was fine and didn't have any foot/ankle pain that he doesn't normally get on a Disney trip.

I think your idea of renting a scooter is a good one though, or at least know of a place that you could call for one if you need it. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I hear ya. Let him sit on a bench (if he needs to) while the rest of you go on rides lol!

I don't have current pricing, but it was cheaper than renting an ECV from Disney (they use Scooterbug). Deckert doesn't have a website but you can google them for contact info and reviews.

I must admit I was a little like that too, but at WDW in Epcot the Flower and Garden Festival was going on. So it was a lot of snacking/drinking and bench sitting! HA!

I use Deckert's. They are an older mom and pop business, so I like giving them my business. They don't have a website. You call and they will deliver to any hotel other than the 3 resort hotels. If you are at the resort hotels, they can deliver, but have to do it in person with you. (Disney requirement to try and make you use Scooterbug.) Dale has always made sure I have a scooter that meets my needs, and has never had an issue in over 10 years. One time I did have a scooter that the battery was dying too fast, and Dale volunteered to come out on Christmas Eve to replace. I told him I could deal with it til the 26th..... (I have had issues with Scooterbug the 2 times I have used them. One was a bad battery, the second time they triple charged me.)

Either he had a very simple break or I'm a total baby but years ago in March I broke an ankle and when the Ortho Dr said "you need surgery", he said don't even think about going to Disney World in May. "Utterly impossible". I had to cancel everything and it was preposterous to think I could have taken that May trip. 7 weeks non weight-bearing in a cast , then boot, then rehab. Rehab was a bear and the screws, pins and plate bother me to this day, years later.

I ended up being able to go to Disney in that November via 45 rehab sessions but had to ice the ankle down several times a day at Disney and stop and sit constantly while the throbbing eased. Slept at BCV with ice packs. Had to keeping changing it.

I give him a lot of credit to think he can do it and my hat is off to him I cringe just thinking about it.

I think it will depend on how broken the ankle was. For example, in 2015, my daughter broke both ankles. Left was shattered, right was "just broke." We did DIsney trips all thru her recovery and she was in wheelchairs and scooters for that summer. After coming out of the cast, the right was decent. The left, she was still in a boot for another 45 days to protect, then a brace for anytime it hurts. The accident was June 18, surgery June 22, casts off Aug 1. The weekend of the DIsneyland Half (she was supposed to run) she was down to a brace and a boot. She refused a scooter once she was in the boot. But she kept up.

Yep, my daughter shattered her left. 3 plates, 13 screws and pins. She did go 3 weeks post surgery, but we did take it easy and did only 2 rides over 4 days, Soarin', and the newly reopened Peter Pan. (We were there for an event she didn't want to miss.). We had a WC in our hotel room, a scooter and manual chair for transport around (she actually preferred the manual chair.)

She wasn't going to let it stop her from doing anything. Oh, to be 30 again,,,,

It is shattered with pins and a plate. According to the doctors timeline he should be 2 weeks post walking boot when we go. That's if he's a perfect patient and he hasn't been so far. He keeps trying to do too much and overdid it yesterday.

I'm thinking we're going to need something. Does anyone have a current price on wheelchairs or scooters from inside the park?

Yeah, 2 weeks post boot will be hard if your group is hitting the park hard. Another option is to keep the boot for the park. It protects the ankle well.

I would vote to rent outside the park, as they are cheaper and easier.

Deckert's a scooter for 4 days is $128 (I do get a discount since I have been with them so long.)

Disneyland - ECV is $60 a day, WC is $15.

We reserved in advance from scooterbug for our trip last week. It was waiting at Bell services at the Disney hotel when we arrived. It was $40 a day with the advance reservation. We dropped it off at Bell services when we were done using it.

For the price to rent a scooter for 4 days, why not buy this model attached below from Walmart? I used something similar at WDW when I was 1 week removed from the cast coming off my ankle and it was a life saver. Plus, he could put the breaks on it and use it to sit down while on long lines, in order not to put too much pressure on it while standing up.

I refused to use a wheelchair or electric scooter but something like the model linked below didn't really hinder my mobility and I was able to keep up for the duration of the vacation.

I will be there the 24-30. My scooter from Deckert surgical was 157 with my discount. I have been using them for years.

He has one of these but it puts so much extra work onto that other leg. Right now he's using the iwalk and likes it.
