We're thinking of using some points to stay at DLP. The idea would be to visit the park on a couple of days (4-yr old DD wouldn't let us get away with skipping it) but mainly using it as a base for day trips to the French countryside. (We'll stay at a different hotel in Paris to see the city.)

Anybody had any experience doing this from DLP? Also, are the extra points for Disneyland Hotel worth spending, in comparison to Sequoia Lodge?

Thanks!

We did just that, used the hotel there as a base to see Disneyland as well as travel other places in Paris. That works just fine. We had a rental car, but train transportation is also available right there at the park.

We stayed in Sequoia, mainly to save points. We found we wern't in the room all that much, with so many things to do. Basically we'd leave in the morning and get back that night. So Sequoia worked just fine for us.

Have a great trip.

This past July our family stayed at the Disneyland Hotel at DLP using DVC points, and it was great. The Disneyland Hotel is simular to the GF in some ways. Your park passes are included if you stay on property. The resteraunts in the hotel are wonderful to. Breakfast is free at the Inovations restraunt and really good. The park is beautful, several of the rides there are better then their counterparts at WDW. The train station was right next to our hotel and using it to go and get around in Paris is a snap! The disney Village is next door to that and make sure you go and do the Bufflo Bills Wild West Show. It's a dinner show built around the recreation of the same show that Bufflo Bill took to Europe. It is GREAT, and worth the money. Have a great time.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Do you think DLP would also be a good place from which to see other parts of France? We're interested in going to Normandy and Burgundy, as well as some other areas.

Thanks again.

DLP is pretty well served by the french motorway system so you shouldn't have too much trouble getting around from there. It takes a couple of hours to get to the Normandy beaches.

I thought the Sequioa was a pretty decent hotel and for the three of you should be more than comfortable. If I was going for one maybe two nights I'd plump for the Disneyland Hotel but for a longer stay I'd go with the Sequioa

Thank you, Vernon. That's just the kind of advice I was hoping for. I think we will go with Sequoia.

DLP Hotel is a lot like GF like the other post stated. With your little one, Sequoia may be more enjoyable since Chip & Dale are the hotel mascots. We stayed at DLP Hotel after a week+ tour in Paris, Normandy, and the Loire Valley and had a great time at all the places.

Some ideas for touring between Paris and Normandy:
* the town of Rouen (where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake) the architecture is amazing and the pedestrian mall is very quaint...

* the town of Caen - don't miss the Peace Museum, highlighting the struggles of the Liberation of France in WWII... they have a great movie -- half the screen shows a German point of view the other half an Allied point of view.

* of course the cemetery above Omaha Beach

* If you can get this far west, you should try for Mont St. Michel (Have you ever seen Impressions de France at Epcot? )

* And any of the chateaus in the Loire Valley (Chambord, Cheneceau, Amboise, Blois)

Ah, the memories of '98... we had another trip to Europe & DLP planned for this fall, but cancelled due to the State Dept. warnings & uncertainty at the time of what our military response would be.

Good luck and Have fun!

Thanks for the great ideas, Darner. Can you give me an idea of how long it takes to drive to some of those places? Would it be easier to go by train?

Thanks again.

sorry can't provide more detailed info...

we were on a bus tour (Globus Tour Co.) so they did the driving for us, but Paris to Rouen wasn't more than 3 hr (and a lot of that was just getting out of Paris)... Rouen to Caen no more than 3 hr... Caen to beaches / cemetery 1 - 2 hours depending on beach destination... Mont St. Michel another couple of hours...

If you'd like to stay closer to Paris, Chartes is a great town too (the Chartes Blue stained glass is legendary as is the prayer labyrinth and crusades relic). Chartes is accessible from Paris via train service.

And Versailles is w/in 15-20 miles of Paris... I thought I saw some brochures on day trip tours from DLParis Hotel to Versailles/Paris sights.

With a little one, renting a car may give you more flexibility on schedules...

So much to see!!! You'll have a great trip with plenty to see no matter how far from Paris you stray...

Darner suggested some really good things to see and do, but don't try to do it by train. You'll really need a car. Most of these places aren't anywhere near a train station. Remember, the train system is designed to move people where they need to go on a day by day basis, not to the tourist areas. You can get to the major cities, but then you'd still need land transportation. (Versailles is an exception, a short walk from the train station there).

At Normandy, be sure to go down to the actual beach. There are paths from the Cemetery. Also don't forget the other beaches. We only really looked at Utah and Omaha. Somewhere, I forget where, there is still a rusted landing craft still sitting on the beach. Finally, drive on down a little further to Point du Hoc. The craters are still there from the Allied bombings and the German fortifications remains are there.

Definitely see Mont St. Michel. It's a long walk up but worth it. Be sure to take the tour at the top.

Go to Versailles for sure. You can do that by train or car. We also saw Napoleon's palace Fontebleu (sp?) which is also worth seeing. (Again, you'd need a car here)

Of course in Paris there's all kinds of stuff.

You'll need to check your maps and plan. Some of these will make pretty long day trips so be prepared.

At Disney, don't miss the Wild West Show. That would expecially fit in with your stay at Sequoia. ;)

Have a great trip.
