We booked a package, staying at Paradise Pier, and I never contacted them ahead of time. But when we checked in, the CM asked if we were celebrating anything. We were, our anniversary (albeit a month late...we purposely didn't celebrate it on the day so our celebration was the trip), and when we said that she ran to the back and came back out (eventually) with Happy Anniversary buttons for the two of us, a big bouquet of pink and red balloons for me and DH, and two blue and purple balloons for our son.
I have a strong feeling that if I had contacted the hotel ahead of time, this could have been waiting for us in the room.
As for other things, there is Vacation Planning, which is like another sort of hotel's Concierge desk. They can help you arrange things, and it's open to anyone staying at a
Disneyland resort. According to the email I got from them in September, you can call them at: (714)300-7526 option 2
There are all sorts of things you can order through them (gift baskets and such!), and they'll also probably send you an email of Room Service things you can order like wildly expensive cookies and milk (though I don't think THOSE things can be waiting in your room...what if you were delayed? ew!).
