So last year when we stayed at DLH the fridges had tiny freezers - enough to fit a couple of small ice packs which came in handy for taking snacks like cheese into the parks (we had a very small soft-sided cooler for this - you know, the kind you get for free for formula/milk from the hospital

)
But this year - NO FREEZER! And we were in the same tower, just one floor below where we were last year So we couldn't keep our ice pack frozen!
Anyway in terms of fitting stuff, I would buy things in 2 qt size or less. We could fit two 2-qt cartons of OJ, a liter of milk, as well as some yogurts, block of cheese, bag of baby carrots, hummus, salami/deli meats. The milk had to go in sideways I think but we made it fit. A gallon of milk would've been really hard to fit but a couple of half-gallon cartons is totally do-able.
Another way to maximize your fridge space is to buy the ultrapasteurized individual milk or juice cartons that can be stored at room temp - and then each night put in as many as you think you'll need for the day. We also got stuff like cereal, granola bars, crackers, fruit (apples, bananas, stuff you don't have to refrigerate) etc that we kept above the fridge in front of the TV. Saved us lots of breakfast money! I think the only breakfast money we spent was for coffee
