Went to DL in April and stayed at the DLH, had a great time and enjoyed the property. Planning to go again in Jan or March of '06. Trip is me and my dd then almost 6. Thinking of trying GC this time, what do you all think? is it worth the extra money (so far it seems to be about $300 more then a standard room at DL,) or are we better off of about 150 less staying at DL with a "downtown disney or pool view"

Personally, I find the Grand Californian far superior, but it's an individual thing. I love the design of the resort--specifically the high ceiling in the lobby, the children's movies viewing area near check-in area, the indoor and outdoor fireplaces, the vines of roses wrapping around the trellises, the huge iron gates fronting the pool--all in view of California Adventure's Pier area. I love the proximity to the parks and the dining options (Storyteller Cafe is awesome--so it Whitewater snacks!). We've had theme park views and standard views--all lovely. I also LOVE the Bambi theme in the rooms--it's just so cute! :lovestruc

I'm spoiled by GCH also. I just love being moments away from Grizzly River Run. I prefer the decor and feel of the hotel, and like that it's newer and more reliable for things like hot showers in the morning. My DS prefers GCH also, but he's a little older than your DS and doesn't like to spend a lot of time in the pool these days. Some younger kids prefer the Neverland Pool at DLH. The good news is, you can't go wrong either way. DLH is fun and magical as well.

Ditto the above...I recently stayed at DLH, and stayed at GC a couple of years ago, and while I really enjoyed DLH, GC is more special to me. I'm especially partial to it because my favorite WDW resort is Wilderness Lodge, and GC reminds me greatly of it!

But really, like one of the above posters said, you can't go wrong either way. If your budget is a factor, then go for DLH, but if you can afford the splurge, try GC! Also, when I stayed at GC, we had a theme park view which was great, but BF and I were looking around and said that we probably would've been happy with any of the views there.
