We are staying at the DLH in late October and need some breakfast advice.

We don't want to do the character breakfast at Goofy's Kitchen. I am hypoglycemic, so I need to eat protein at breakfast, not just carbs. Does the Coffee Shop at DLH have any hot protein breakfast foods like eggs or a breakfast sandwich? When we stayed at GC, we ate breakfast at Whitewater. Is there anything comparable to that at DLH?

I don't recall the coffee shop having anything hot, just bagels, danishes, fresh fruit, coffee, milk, juices and hot chocolate. Not sure what is offered for room service either.

You're best bet is probably downtown disney, but I couldn't tell you where to try.

Here is the thing - there used to be an actual coffee shop/diner type of restaurant there in DLH up until when they remodeled. Then it was gone. If that place were still there, I would say go there. They had great food. Now, I didn't even realize there was any other place to eat breakfast food in DLH! I know PPH has a little coffee bar with pastries and juice, so I guess DLH has something similar. It's too bad that you can't deal with Goofy's because they actually have great bacon and eggs and protein items. I understand your dilemma, though - if I don't eat a certain quantity of protein early in the day, my blood sugar is out of control and I almost pass out! It is not just about being hungry, per se. Sometimes your blood sugar can be acting up and you are full from a big lunch, but if it lacked protein, you feel you have to keep eating! I could chow down on 10 pancakes and that would ruin me if I didn't eat equal parts eggs and/or bacon-sausage. It has to be heavy on the protein and light on everything else! And I LOVE spaghetti, but if I wolf down a plate of that, forget it. I will faint. Carbs are so good but they are the enemy to my blood sugar.

So I would suggest eating breakfast at Storytellers Cafe, where you can eat off the menu items including oatmeal, or if you are trying to avoid characters altogether, eat in DTD at one of those places. Worse comes to worse, eat at Carnation Cafe on Main Street or River Belle Terrace in Adventureland/New Orleans Square. But the reason I like the buffet places if because I can get as much of the protein items as I want, and sometimes a regular off the menu place doesn't give enough! But al the buffet places involve characters.

I don't know about you but not only do I have to load up on protein, I have to actually have something to sink my teeth into. It is not enough to load up on oatmeal or yougurt for me. Food needs to have texture, which is why I have to eat chicken or turkey or lean beef. Sometimes a quick spoonful of peanut butter will do the trick in calming the blood sugar but I really have to stick with lean meat in a sandwich and a banana.

We have eaten breakfast at Steakhouse 55 (next to Goofy's Kitchen) formerly known as Granville's Steak House...never a long wait...made to order breakfast...so good...jc

Oooh...do they sell breakfast there? How early do they start serving? I bet it is cheaper there than to get something off the menu at Storytellers, which is ridiculously expensive. So if our OP doesn't want to wait to eat breakfast in the park, then maybe Steakhouse 55 would be the best option. I might even try that myself the next time I am there, although, as stated earlier, with the buffet, I can load up on the protein. But Goofy's prices are getting a little daunting.

We always go to Steakhouse 55 for breakfast. My kids love it, the service is superb, the prices reasonable and the food very good. They have a good assortment of items, too. My girls usually share a breakfast but there is a kid's menu as well. We like the quiet, elegant atmosphere and the fact that it's very kid friendly.

Thanks for the advice about Steakhouse 55. Just checked out the menu on AllEarsNet. Looks great! And it would never have occurred to me that they offer breakfast.

Yeah, hubby and I are going to do a couple character breakfasts, but on one of the days we aren't, we plan on eating at Steakhouse 55.
Their breakfast menu looks good, and it'll be super convenient since we're staying at DLH.

I know there's a Mimi's Cafe like, close by, but if you're staying at DLH, I'd say stick w/Steakhouse 55! :thumbsup2

My fiancee & I ate at La Brea Bakery Cafe. I thought it was pretty darn good and it is the closest to the parks. Although I guess based on the pictures, the meals are carb heavy:

I've eaten at Storyteller's Cafe and if you do the buffet there, I KNOW they have a great selection of protein. Other than that, I have not eaten at other places in DTD for breakfast. Hope this helps !!

I didn't suggest LaBrea Bakery because I was thinking of the carb-heavy food focusing on their baked goods, but they obviously have some items to be ordered with eggs and bacon or sausage. All the buffets have great protein and you can eat as much of it as you need, which is key for a hypoglycemic, but I am not sure if our OP here wants to avoid character breakfasts altogether or just Goofy's?? I think that if eating in the park is ruled out, it sounds like the best suggestion so far is Steakhouse 55. I know that IF you are going to go to Storytellers Cafe at all, the off the menu items are so pricey that it is more worthwhile to just get the buffet! You get more for your money with the buffet.

I have never been to Steakhouse 55 !! I want to go now ;)

I also agree about the buffet at Storyteller's Cafe, you do get more bang for your buck if you do it !

I am curious to try it, too. I wonder how early they open for breakfast. I do like the idea of going to a buffet and loading up with a bunch of eggs but the buffets are getting SO expensive that I don't see how large families can afford them. Sometimes my companions don't want to spend that kind of money on one meal if they are not that hungry, and I don't want to always be the one treating for breakfast, so we may have to mosey on over to that Steakhouse 55. Here is my plan - I am jobless now, but I am brainstorming over how to come up with the cash to use this Disney PIN# discount and get a room for the off-season, in late September or Early October. Even though it WILL be off season, and kids will be back in school, I know that the line for TSMM will still be bad, so I want to get down there on a Friday morning EARLY, chow down and load up on the protein, and then hustle right over to DCA to line up for TSMM. If I can't get a hotel room, then I still have a few DL tickets that one of my clients gave me and we will just go for the day during the off-peak season, and just upgrade to a Park Hopper. Either way, I don't want to waste too much time with eating that morning so we can hurry and get to TSMM, so I have to have a major shot of protein in a short amount of time so we can get done with breakfast fast and hustle! Goofy's might not be right for that day.

So sorry to hear that. It is a dilemma when trying to work on time and still being able to make time for breakfast and getting to long line attractions. I hope everything works out and you get to do more than just one day at DLR. Lord knows its better to go for one day !!!

You can check the menus for DLR here:

Have fun!

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much!

The reason that I didn't want to do a character breakfast daily is that they are so expensive. $25 for breakfast for 1 person? Yikes! We'll do a character breakfast one morning, probably at the Plaza Inn. The rest of the mornings, we're just looking for something reasonably priced, quick and fairly relaxed. Based on the info from Rich's link, it looks like Steakhouse 55, Ralph Brennan's Creole Kitchen, Rainforest Cafe, and even La Brea Bakery have what I'm looking for.

Sherry, you're right. If I don't get a good balance of protein and carbs at each meal, my blood sugar is in the cellar a few hours later and I'm in big trouble. Especially with all the walking that we do at DL, a good, hot, nourishing breakfast sets the tone for a great day.

If we DO have to just go for one day (assuming I have not found a way to book a room yet), it will have to be an 'abbreviated trip.' We always get so much more done when we have a hotel room for two or more nights and can stretch out the trip over a few days. This shortened version would be just for the sake of seeing the Halloween stuff, getting on TSMM, going on the HMH ride, and checking out a few other of our favorite rides (AstroBlasters, Soarin' and of course, Pirates!). We would not be able to do everything. But if that is the only choice, I will take it for a Disney fix until I can get back to the GCH for a three-night holiday extravaganza!

If I remember correctly the hours for Steakhouse 55 Breakfast is 7:00/11:30am...jc

Yes! I am right there with you. When I tell my friends I need protein, they think it just means that I am hungry. But I tell them that I could have just eaten a huge feast and not be hungry, but if it was lacking in protein my blood sugar will be out of control and I will feel woozy and faint unless I eat! So I am the one at the buffet with the big tower of eggs and bacon and sausage, or ordering the chicken dishes at restaurants! A lot of the restaurants don't serve good quantities of the protein. I mean, I love my Mickey Mouse waffles and pancakes as much as the next person, but if that was all I ate for breakfast, I would pass out in the middle of the line for something or other! Not cute!

Oh, and by the way, I think $25 for a buffet would actually be a REASONABLE price now. If I am not mistaken, it sounds like the buffet prices have skyrocketed again to something like $38 for dinner and $30 for breakfast. I could be wrong, but I know they went up again! You will do well with Rain Forest Cafe, probably. They serve big portions, so they likely have a lot of protein on one plate!

Ok so where is this place the top pic makes my mouth water. how much was it it looks delicioues

If it's the costs of the character breakfasts that are a problem, I'd probably go over to Harbor and have a nice breakfast at Mimi's or something. Eating onsite every meal is expensive all in of itself!

But I was going to say, at Goofy's we've had eggs, bacon and all of that. We did the Lilo and Stitch breakfast in June, and they had the BEST eggs. I had two helpings. LOL
