DL Flu Precautions?

I would hardly worry about a flu that has killed nobody in the United States and infected only 41 out of 300,000,000 people.

This is one of the most disgusting instances of the media blowing things out of proportion that I have ever seen.

This just in: A woman and her baby got the flu. Everyone's fine. No not a joke. A woman and a 20month old baby got the flu and both are fine. I agree with you this is getting totally silly.

but maybe at the end people will once and for all understand the difference between influenza and gastroenteritis?

Never will they grasp the difference.

Our economy is fragile right now and one thing that the tourism industry does not need is people canceling trips out of hysteria. All we need is hysteria to shut down the industry because it is a web here and anything damaged means others are hurt. The hotel worker who gets laid off will not buy a television this year and the van driver will not buy DVDs and CDs which means those industries are hurt.

The reason that Wet Wipes work better than Purell is because Wet Wipes actually WIPE the germs off. Purell only stunts the germs for a bit and then they wake up. If you use Purell, wipe it off with a tissue to get the germs OFF.

Sorry but you are so wrong. Hand sanitizers destroy the "germs" as you put it. Whether or not "germs" are on your hands is not relevant. Wet wipes cannot physicially remove ALL the germs. So nope... the best choice is hand sanitizer.

I guess I am not that worried..I am heading to DL on May 16...I will keep my sanitizer handy..and.. not touch my face...but..other than that..I am not any more worried with this hype..than with any other flu..which kills people every year..Wasn't it last year we were worried about bird flu?

I've been at Disneyland for the past week and there has been no difference since I got here. We are using the same precautions that we would normally use, washing hands with soap and hand sanitizer.

We fly back to Canada tomorrow and wonder if there will be a difference travelling. The only place I've seen anything is on the news.

I understand your position and appreciate what you said. Just going by what my doctor said since we are in San Antonio which is one of the major hot beds for the swine flu. I work in 3 of the school districts that are currently shut down until May 11th due to reported cases. He said that neither is as good independently as wet wipes do not kill enough bacteria and purell needs to be wiped off after use. Because the bacteria is still on your hands. That is why hand washing is best because the bacteria is washed off.At my daughter's school they are asking for the kids to use Purell and then wipe off their hands shortly after as well. Maybe that is how our CDC is handling since we are so close to Mexico and are at a higher level of caution

If the bacteria/virus is dead, it doesn't matter if the little carcass remains on your hand, because dead "germs" can't hurt you.

WHO has lift alert status to 5 (out of 6). If you have trips planned for longer than a week from now I still would not cancel your trip until the last possible moment. I think another week will show the direction of this bug better. There have been plenty of nay sayers saying that this is just another Flu and people die from flu every year and this is very true but common flus usually only kill the elderly, the very young and people with compromised immune systems. This bug appears to be able to kill even healthy people and at a rate that could be higher than 3%, couple that with the seemingly ease this is spreading around the world then I think the WHO are doing the right things. There is simply to much at stake if they get it wrong.

We probably won't know the true extent of how bad this thing is for at least another two weeks, I for one are hoping the nay sayers are right and it all blows over.

I am not going to cancel my Disney trip and hide under the bed..I don't think this is any more dangerous to a healthy person than the regular flu...

Brave call, if I was going to DL next week I don't think I could be as sure as you as I just am not qualified to judge. There are plenty who are qualified saying this thing has the potential to be really bad but also that it could be no worse than a normal flu, they say its too early to say which.

Then I never was much of a gambler....

I for one, hope lots of people are scared and stay home! More rides for us!!

:dance3:

We'll be drinking plenty of fluids, washing our hands lots, taking our vitamins, and using our wet-ones sanitizing wipes... So, please... everyone else--stay home!!

Sorry folks but this family will be there. I dont care if this flu mutates into the Blob and starts eating people in New Orleans Square. Ill be in line for Space Mountain laughing at its ugly swine flu face.

we are booked to travel to DL next wednesday ... we are on the fence at this point ...MAINLY BECAUSE we are flying from SC and are nervous about getting sick while there and not being able to get home OR getting stranded at Grand Californian. Not sure we can spring ($$$) for this resort for extra nites than we already have booked if we get sick while there! :rotfl:

i HATE to reschedule b/c it is our son's bday and our 15th anniversary ...poor ds thinks he is celebrating his bday in DL ... :confused3

if it was a planned to trip to wdw, we would prob go and hope to have a great time, but 3000 miles is a LOOOONG way away from home!

so you folks who are going, have a good time!!

Were leaving next Wednesday and playing it by ear to the end. When we do go we always do our same routine when we travel (pretty much what has already been said) and we do pretty well no colds etc.

got to say I was worried too about our June trip. But I will watch and wait.

If I had a special event coming up around the trip, I would still plan to go at this point. I don't think it would be very hard to find a room in Anaheim that costs less than the GCH, even if you didn't book in advance. ;) If you are seriously worried about being "stranded" then you could also book a refundable "just in case" budget hotel for after your GCH stay ends as well, and then cancel near the end of the trip once no one has gotten sick. (I think the odds of you getting the flu while in CA are pretty low, though, and the odds of being hospitalized over it are lower still.)

I don't see that you'd have trouble getting home if you're healthy because it's pretty widespread everywhere--we aren't even closing the border with Mexico, so I'm not foreseeing the government closing the borders between states. If you're sick, that's another matter, of course, but it would work out.

Of course, if you don't feel comfortable going, then don't go. And if something changes drastically between now and Wednesday (God forbid), then of course you may need to change your plans again.

But I thought I should point out that there's at least one option between "cancel the trip" and "go and worry about paying exorbitant amounts each night to stay in a hotel in the event someone in my family gets sick". :rotfl:
