DL Cast Member told me my sons name is weird

This won't be a popular opinion but I really think if you are going to pick unusual names or spellings for your children, you must be ready for criticism and laughter. My god daughters both were given bizarrely spelled names by their mother and they or she hear about it all the time. Forget it. You chose the odd spelling for a reason, it was different. Some people just can't wrap their brains around that.

And some people can't wrap their brains around the fact that is it rude to criticize and laugh at someones name.

I'm just curious, is that what you think happened in this situation? Because it clearly didn't.

Much ado about nothing. My son has a rather unique name (Storm) and when I get comments I just say, "we like it." People have opinions and will express them and it isn't anything to get upset over.

I'm sure Jaymes will correct the spelling of his name thousands of times over his lifetime.

:thumbsup2I have a friend with 2 kids...both "odd/unique" names and she gets upset because people say "excuse me", "did you say?", "can you spell that"?

What did she expect?
:confused3

I would have immediately asked for the CM's manager. Manager's can't fix what they don't know about. Your not reporting this just allows the CM to continue to be rude! Did you find out their name?

With that said... I love your son's name... I like it when there is a unique spelling! Very cool! :thumbsup2

Why? If you dont things to be different (like adding a Y to James) then dont be surprised when you are treated differently.

There is a new girl at my store and her name is BEOYONKA!:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 What the Heck is that???? OH! Its PRONOUNCED BIANCA!!!:headache:

We just had a girl start at my job and her name is Marjury - I can only guess that her parents had no idea how to spell it and sounded it out and spelled it that way!

I interpreted this entirely differently. I took the CM's comment to mean "how stupid can the person who made the brick be b/c the correct spelling of the name is right there, spelled correctly. Can't the person who made the acrylic brick read?"

I didn't read it as a slight on your son's name or it's spelling. More like "What idiot who made the brick doesn't double check the spelling?!"

Maybe I'm odd but that's how I interpreted it.

That is how I read the situation also.

That is not fair. Different, YES. If thats actually what you mean... but in this case it was STUPID and rude we were talking about.

Honestly, do you still think this comment was directed at you? In today's world of completely unique names and various spellings of traditional names, do you really think that CMs haven't seen it all? I think they're quite used to unique guest names by now. Remember, they see guest names from all over the world. Ones that most of us may not even seen before. And with all the truly crazy names out there, this CM decided to pick your son's name to call stupid/weird?

It just seems so clear that the CM was was directing that comment at the person misreading the order/making the brick rather than your son's unique spelling of his name. I think you're trying to make way to much fuss over something that was not even directed at you. I'd let it go. :)

I've spent 54 years with an unusual name. Cordia. It is pronounced Core-de-a. Short a. Accent on the first syllable. Can you imagine that 90% of people mess it up. Do I get upset? No. The only time I was hurt was when a lady went, "Ewwww". That hurt. Even worse is my middle name, Lovell. Blech, I hate that one. Sorry for any Lovell's out there but I do. My mom named me after a friend and her daughter. I have run into 1 other Cordia in my whole life as a nurse. She lived in WVa. I did have one lovely little black lady patient who's sister shared my name. She was also named something unusual but that was 30 years ago and I have forgotten it.

You can certainly name you child anything you wish but it will always be a topic of conversation, a problem on legal documents and sometimes hated by your child. My DH's legal name is Tim. Not Timothy. He was whacked by his teachers in elementary school for refusing to write Timothy. :confused3 . I can't beging to tell you how many times we have had to have purchase agreements, wills, checks, etc rewritten to correct his name to Tim.

My DH refused to use cute/differently spelled names so we have a Michael and a Benjamin.

Yep DH is tony, not anthony. Worse yet is he has no middle name, and our last name could be a first/middle name.
Poor DS I didn't even think when we named him after FIL & my grandfather that his first name and middle names can both be last names

I haven't read the whole thread but I can see why the CM thought "JAYMES" was the wrong spelling. I mean, who puts a Y in the middle of a name like that, especially when it's a very traditional name?:confused3

Yes I can so relate to bothof these men...my name is Beth-NOT-Elizabeth and you cannot believe how many people thnk I am lying:confused3 like why would I? Or just assume it's Elizabeth and start filling things out using that. And my mom did it because I had a really long maiden name and she thought she was doing me a favor:rotfl:

Good for you! Dont even check this thread anymore, now you have some bored old biddies with nothing better to do than to openly trash your choice in a name. Narrow minded. Rude. Tacky. Everyone is brave (oris that ig mouthed) behind a user name.

I ordered a DL brick for my hubbys bday 5 months ago, and also bought the small acrylic version to keep. The first one came with my daughters name wrong, they fixed that but then got my sons name wrong. I called and the cast member on the phone was the kind who talks too much and talks over you... when I told her my sons name was spelled wrong she said "Oh yea. Why would anyone do that? That looks so stupid!"
But she was looking (on her screen) at the CORRECT spelling for my son.
Yes, we have a non traditional spelling but she really put her foot in her mouth.
My sons name is JAYMES (pronounced James) my complaint was the brick spelling was JAIMES.
With non trad names you get peoples opinions sometimes, but rarely so blatantly rude as the Disney CM.

I like your son's name...but from the way I read your post, the CM mistakenly thought Jaymes was the WRONG spelling and she was trying to empathize with you, thus putting her foot in her mouth. :confused3 I think everyone has done that at times. I don't think she was being blatantly rude. Now if she knew Jaymes was the correct spelling and said it was stupid, I agree that is rude.

I am glad you named your child a "cool" name. Him liking it is a bonus:thumbsup2

But, he is home schooled and hasn't had to correct people over and over (and over) again. Check back with him in a few years;)

I'm glad he likes it. But I agree with the PP who said that if you give a child a name that is unusual or a traditional name with an unusual spelling, you are basically dooming that child to a life of "What? How do you pronounce/spell that?".
