OK. So how hard is it to make your own cornice boards for the window? I've seen it done in some HGTV shows and it doesn't look that hard, but hey its tv.

Anyone here done it? Or know a good place to get a kit? I have 3 bedroom windows I want to do.

Oh it's soooo easy! Just get some plywood and brackets for the corners so you can make a U shape. Add some batting and staple it. Then add the fabric, pulling tight and being mindful of the corners. Getting it up on the wall was harder - and I can't quite remember what we did. So think of that before you start the project.

Getting it up on the wall is exactly why i asked. I can't think of how to do that. Maybe I'll ask my dad. Cause they always show the batting and the stapling the fabric, but never exactly what they use to stick it to the walls :lmao:

I can let you know this weekend--I had some made and we are putting them up this weekend. We have one for our french door and one each for the windows on either side of the door in the bump-out in our kitchen. There is some special hardware for the door so the valance opens and closes with the door. For the window ones we went to our local hardware store and found some bracket things. Basically you screw them on the ends of the cornice and then screw some screws into the wall and hang them. They are the kind of thing that has a larger, rounded opening on one side and you put the screw head on that then it slides down into a smaller section. Hopefully you get the picture with that.

I sort of got the picture. But i have a couple of different brackets in my head. My dad is a retired electrician and basically very handy. He also lives 3 states away. But growing up he's had all kinds of brackets floating around in the house.

If I had a pic of the brackets, I'm sure Dh and I could put it together very easily. Would we need a drill? I think we have 1 of those

Yes, you would probably need a drill and some good wall anchors for the screws that go in the wall. The ones we got look like big plastic screws. If you have a local hardware store, not Home Depot a real hardware store, they would be able to help you. I will try to remember to take a picture of what we are using.

You know how on the back of some picture frames they have a hole for the nail/screw that is bigger then goes smaller at the bottom, sort of like a rounded off ice cream cone. That is what they look like.

Ok great. I'm almost sure I know what you're going for. I still have to pick out the fabric for the boards, we just haven't had a lot of time to go looking but we are this weekend(DH doesn't know it yet).

Could you send me pics when you're done? I'd love to see how they look. Or post em in this thread even.

Will do!

Ok, here you go here are pictures of the hardware, then the hardware attached to the back of the cornice and then the cornices up. The middle one has special hardware so the cornice opens and closes with the door (the left side of the cornice is hinged). It took us about 2 hours to get these all up (the door one took most of that!)

I love them!!

I have had fabric, batting and wood to make cornices for our bedroom for weeks.....I hope mine come out good!
We were planning to use L brackets but I like the brackets you used. :cutie:

I made two for my boys' room. It was quite easy, I didn't use plywood though. My friend told me about a type of lightweight board, foam core board that they sell at craft stores. I bought mine at RagShop, they're no longer in business here. Anyway, she showed me how to do one, it was fast and super easy. To mount them onto the wall, I used L brackets and Velcro. I attached Velcro to the top of the bracket and the other part to the inside of the cornice. Then, I aligned the two Velcro parts and voila! You don't have to use Velcro, you can simply place the cornice on the L bracket and it won't fall. The thing that I liked about using the foam board is how light it is and how it easy it was to install. :thumbsup2

the hardware stores sell it in large sheets and in several thicknesses. i cut out my shape with a box cutter, then covered it with batting and fabric. used an L bracket on the wall with a piece of velcro on it and the board. worked like a charm. Also, you can put the fabric on with those large T-pins. it can be changed in no time flat. i have them in four rooms of my house.

Aren't they great!:thumbsup2 I used spray glue to keep the batting from moving while I was working with the fabric. I plan on changing the fabric on the ones in the boys' room very soon.
