well have looked at packages through travel agents and they are all coming out over £6,000 so i really want to book my holiday in individual elements car , flights and hotel all seperate
i know the advantage of booking as a package the whole thing is covered

what insurance companies do other diy bookers use and do you have a emergency provision in place to protect your itinerary / individual things booked

I've used Direct Travel for the past two trips and using it again for our upcoming one. All these trips have been DIY. When I did packages, I used different policies.

I did not take out the very basic one and did opt for the more expensive cover option and also added on Natural Catastrophe (costs £20 per person). It does not cover the package as a whole as I do not have a package, but it covers me for all the individual elements I want to be covered for (cancellation, airline failure, delays, lost baggage, curtailment, etc) as well as the usual personal cover for medical, liability, loss/damaged items ..... blah blah.

I think insurance is a very personal thing and I would never recommend anyone taking out the same cover as me just because it works for me. There is no way around it- you have to go through all the aspects of the policies you are looking at and make sure that it suits YOUR needs.

I do have a tendency to over insure but this is my choice. If I am spending several thousand on a trip, I'm not going to go for cheap insurance to try and save £30 on protecting that trip. Again, not saying that is the right way, as there are arguments as to why this is not the smartest idea as well. What you need now is for others to post on here and you can then go research your info based on various options.

thankyou , thats useful yes i would definatley rather pay a bit more for the insurance to cover as much elemenst as possible ,as we woulndt be in a financial position to rebook and pay upfront for other flighst accomodation if soemthing went wrong

it does make me feel that a diy book is not as scary and unsafe as the travel agents make out to you ( but they want your booking so i supose they will tell you anything to guarantee you choose them ) :thumbsup2
