Disposable Water Cameras Went Through Airport Security!!

We are in florida and I just realized I forgot to have my disposable water cameras hand checked at the airport and they went through the security screening. I've heard that will ruin the cameras. Does anyone have experience with this? I bought 4 cameras ($9.99 each!!) for our cruise and I'm not sure if they are ruined. But I don't want to waste money on new ones if I don't need to. But I don't want to risk our pictures either!

Thanks,
Maggie

Here is some info I found on the subject, Diane.

Cameras. Digital cameras are considered safe, but you'll have to take special care with conventional cameras, or more specifically, the film. The International Imaging Industry Association (I3A) says you should never pack unprocessed film or disposable cameras in your checked baggage because it can be damaged by higher X-ray doses. Otherwise, the I3A maintains that you can safely pass film rated at speeds below ISO 1000 through the scanners at checkpoints. But passengers have the right to request a hand inspection. What's more, some passengers are randomly asked to submit carry-ons for an additional level of scrutiny, apart from general checkpoints. Because higher-intensity or multiple scans may cause streaks or fogging when your pictures are exposed, even on lower-speed film, you should again ask for a hand inspection. (This is especially true overseas, where stronger X-rays may be used.) You can expedite matters by packing film in a clear or mesh bag. But Lisa Walker, co-executive director of the I3A, says security personnel aren't always clued in on your rights and may give you a hard time. "There's a great deal of inconsistency from one security checkpoint to the next," she says. "According to the FAA, people have the right to request hand inspection of film ... but with heightened security, requests for hand searches are not being granted, at least not consistently."

Your film will be ok if it was in your carry on. We haven't hand checked our disposable cameras and they've always been fine.

They should be fine. You don't want disposable cameras in your checked bags. The xray is much stronger and will damage the film.

Yes, it was in my carryon. The water cameras are 400 speed.

So, I feel a little better about using them. Thanks.

I may buy myself a new one and let the kids and DH use these just in case!

I have left my disposible cameras in my carryon bag several times and never had a problem developing them.

My husband is a photographer, so this info is first hand.

THe higher speed the film is, the more chance of it being ruined.

Film that is in a case (or camera) and NOT Used yet (meaning not wound out of it's container) has a lower chance of being ruined.

How many times did it go through the x-ray? If only once or even twice you should be fine.

We went on a cruise a few years ago and our film was x-rayed twice - on the ship (supposedly safer for film) - ALL of the film was ruined - and sadly we did not find out about it until after we developed it (it was an Alaskan cruise - 19 or 20 films, all ruined...hubby now uses digital because of it!).

You may have some minor discoloration. THe alaska films that we had would have been fine for scrapbooking, but not for professional photos (like my hubby took!).

If I were you I'd use the film, but develop it before you get on a plane again so you don't expose it to the xray machines again.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't planning on bringing it through security again. I brought tyvek bags from Snapfish that you can mail to them for developing after using. So I was planning on sending them through the mail before we left.

We ruined our DL photos when we had the cameras scanned. You could use photopass a lot as well. That way if the pics are ruined you can use that.

Good luck:thumbsup2

We had a disposable camera when we were in Antigua. We remembered to take it out on the way there (with a stop), and on the way back at one security check point, but we had to go through 2 checkpoints for some reason and it came out all grainy... pretty much ruined.

Here is soe pixie dust:wizard:

The effects are cumulative. So you should be ok. I wouldn't take it through security again.
