I need a cell phone for just 3 days while my mom stays at my house to watch my dogs. We have a phone that works off Cable and if power goes out she will have no phone and freak out. Is there a phone I can buy that will only have a set # of minutes for such an emergency?

This might be a little dated, but I thought Virgin sells cell phones with prepaid minutes on it. They were advertised at Best Buy at one time. Maybe someone else can help you better than I can.

get an "old fashioned" phone that plugs into the phone jack- not a cordless with a battery and power cord. Everyone should have one just incase of power failure.

however. 90% of the time, if we lose power here, its due to a down pole- which means, the telephone lines went with it!

My mother uses Virgin prepaid mobile...my nieces too. I think other providers have them as well. (AT&T mebbe?).

Thanks for the info. I can't use the old fashion kind as our phone works off the cable system, not the telephone wires. If electricity goes out, no phones. When we had verizon, if electric went out, we still had phone service.

are you totally on the cable phone now and have no land line? If so, check out virgin mobile. You do have to buy the cell phone (the cheapest is 59.99) but the way it works is that you have to fill up the phone with at least $20 every 90 days. That's it.

Can you introduce her to the neighbors? Maybe if something goes wrong, she can connect thru the neighbors. Plus, by introducing her to them, they'll know she's there and will kind of watch out for her too. We do that here, when we go out on vacation, we let our neighbor know so they can keep a watch and collect the mail for us.

they sell them at Walmart. You buy a phone card with how many minutes you want. Then you can buy more phone cards whenever you need.:p

Pre paid phones would be your best choice.

Your local radioshack should have prepaid specials going on.

Tracfone, AT&T and Verizon also have pay-as-you-go service. You have to buy a phone, but watch for specials where they offer a free phone or rebate on purchase.

Oh, go to their websites and check the coverage areas before you go buy one.

Compare pricing. Would it be cost effective to add a line to your existing wireless plan so that your mother would be included?

Don't get a trac phone, they rarely work as well as a cell phone. Trac phones have a flaw that only lets them work in certain regions of the usa.
