Disneyworld vet Disneyland rookie

Anyone with MaxPass experience, for our first day Monday (President's Day Holiday) We probably won't be getting into the parks until closer to noon. Should I not waste the money and try the free paper fast passes and try the Max Pass on our second day instead? Or is the park going to be insanely busy due to the holiday and I should get it anyway?

I don't have MaxPass experience (I will at the end of the month), but since you're getting to the parks later in the day, i'd almost say just skip it for that day and opt for paper fast passes. I don't know how busy the parks usually get on a 3 day holiday weekend, but i'd imagine fast passes for many of the bigger attractions might already be gone by the time you get there.

. I'm on the fence about the park hopper since it bumps up the cost more, but will do the three day pass for sure.

I'm also on the fence about buying the fast pass thing. It hurts me to pay for something that is free at WDW. But it might come in handy since I don't know where any rides are and I can just book the fast pass on my phone. Am I correct you can only have one fast pass at a time? Are all the rides on it? Also can I buy it for one or two days instead of the whole trip?

I've been looking into the restaurants to book while there. I think I'll do Blue Bayou because that seems pretty cool to see the pirates ride while dining. I want to do a nice meal too to celebrate his birthday there so was thinking Napa Rose or Steakhouse 55. I noticed these can't be booked until 60 days out so I have to wait a while. Are restaurants as hard to book there as it is for WDW?

We were there a couple of weeks ago and Max Pass started on our last day. Basically, it runs just like what you know of as the old fast pass system, with the difference being that you can book your one at a time on the phone rather than having to go to the machines. There are some perks to it that others have discussed that have used it as to timing/getting that first FP of the day/once you have scanned in being able to book another even after you have left the park. That said, it is very new, so there could be changes before February. Not all the rides have FP at DLR, like they do since FP+ at WDW, but they have added some before going to Max Pass. If you are a photo person, especially with just 2 of you, one benefit to MAX pass is it includes all your photopass/ride/meal photos for that day. At Disneyland for photopass+ which has all those photos it is $39 per day, or you can pay $78 for a weekly version which would include all photos on consecutive days up to a week. So with just 2 of you at $20 a day for max pass, you get 3 days of photos for $60 and the FP ability. This is cheaper than what all 3 days of photos would otherwise cost you. So, if you care about photopass/ride/meal photos and want them for all 3 days- maxpass might be a decent deal for you. Max Pass is currently a daily purchase at $10 per person/per day-- of course that could change by February.

Blue Bayou is nice. It is along the same lines atmosphere wise as San Angel Inn-- you are "outside" while you are indoors with a boat ride passing by. The atmosphere is great- some people love the food, in our opinion it is so so. A fun birthday splurge if you are interested in World of Color would be the dessert package. For WOC even if you do a dining package watching the show is standing room only and you have to wait a long time for the best position. The dessert party is further back, but with a great view. You get a table to sit at during the show and before the show they bring you a basket of bread; a plate of desserts and cheeses and if you drink- alcoholic beverages (or non-alcoholic if you do not).

Speaking of drinking as far as hoppers- DH likes them for the sole purpose that the Karl Strauss beer truck is on the wharf at CA. He has been known to disappear from DL, to hop over to CA and get a beer. He has left DD and I at Small World, gone over to do that while we got in a 10 minute line to ride, and by the time we were done with the ride and called to see where he was, he had already drank his beer as he took a leisurely walk through CA back towards DL, and then exited CA and was in the DL gate and by Town Square-- that gives you an idea of how easy hopping is.

I'm high jacking this thread a little here. It sounds as if we are of the same mind set about the Disneyland Resort Hotels. To that, I am trying to plan a Disneyworld trip next year and talk about overwhelming. If I wanted to stay somewhere most like the Disneyland Hotel where would you suggest?

There really is no where "like" the Disneyland Hotel at WDW, which is why we like the DLH. I would say that any of the Deluxe hotels will probably be to your liking. I have heard people say that the Contemporary is most similar to DLH, but we aren't big contemporary fans and we love DLH. If you like Trader Sams at DLH, then the Poly has Trader Sams there. The Poly also is walking distance from the monorail at the TTC that has an express line to both MK and EPCOT, so it is great in terms of transportation. GF, POLY, and Contemporary are Magic Kingdom resorts, meaning that they are on the resort monorail line and are easy access to Magic Kingdom by boat or monorail. You can walk to Magic Kingdom from the contemporary. WL, is very similar to GC, but it is bigger (to us GC is the scaled down version of WL). It is also in the Magic Kingdom area, but you have to take a boat or bus to Magic Kingdom from there. The rooms are smaller than the other MK resorts (think the difference between GC and DLH), but it typically is cheaper. If you are interested in EPCOT, Yacht Club, Beach Club and Boardwalk are all walking distance to EPCOT, and also you can walk to DHS, but it is a little farther. If you are going during something like Food and Wine at EPCOT, they are fun places to be. If the pool is important, in our opinion BC/YC have the best pool area (they share- the hotels are actually connected). Animal Kingdom Lodge is nice ( I think I forgot it in my above post, but we have stayed there). It is fun to get a Savannah room and look out your window or stand on your balcony and see giraffes, but it is farther away from the other parks. It is buses everywhere from there. The rooms are also around WL size- so a little smaller than the others. It really is a matter of what you prefer. If you ever want to pm me with questions, I'm happy to help.

That's interesting about security! So it's before you get to DTD? Then you just wait to scan your ticket to the park when you ge there?

That is correct. They moved the security sometime last year. The security on Harbor is still in the same place, but now you have to go through security before you get into DTD. Which is actually really nice, because then you can park hop or go into DTD throughout the day without having to go through security again.

It is so great coming from DLH!!!! You no longer go through with all the people getting off the tram from the parking lot, so the lines were much shorter. It is mostly people from DLH, and they have several lines going, so it was really fast. We loved it. Also, you don't have to go through security at the monorail because you have already done it to get to the monorail which made the line shorter there - you just have to scan park ticket there. We were very pleased. The only thing, which was no big deal for us, is that if you went into the Grand Californian for something, you had to go through security to get back to DTD, or through their park entrance. We just didn't feel the need to got to GC anyway. We usually went through there to go to the CA entrance to avoid the long security lines for the parks-- but now they were short and we were already through them coming from DLH.

S you can see from my signature we have converged on the Swan. It is not owned by Disney. But it as most of the perks and frankly feels a lot like the DLH.

What I love about it the most is location. Walk to Epcot and walk or take a short boat ride to DHS. And it is relatively central for access to MK and AK. Finally the price is quite reasonable for such a nice place.

The problem I have with the WDW Deluxe hotels is most of them are so far off the beaten path. The MK hotels are nice for MK but not really for the other three parks. The Wilderness Lodge is just kind of far from everything. I love the Animal Kingdom Lodge but it is really only convenient to AK and not the other parks.

The three most central deluxe hotels (and thus best located IMO) are Yacht Club, Beach Club and Boardwalk. The YC and BC both tend to be quite expensive. The Boardwalk is not quite as bad usually. And I do not particularly care for the theming of these hotels.

I think I'll wait on the MaxPass after the first day since it'll only be a half day anyway and we can then see if we are okay with just using the free paper fast passes. It's been so long since WDW had those I've completely forgotten how it works using those. The photo part of it is nice. I never buy it at WDW and if I like a picture I have it posted with their watermark all over it.

Do you know if WOC is every night or this is also only on weekends? I really want to see this since we don't have anything like it back on the East coast.

WOC is shown nightly year round. IMO it is the best Disney show. Period.

I have a couple more questions.

  • For the Disney bus transportation to the airport, how reliable are the departure times? I know LA traffic can sometimes be really bad and I don't want to run the risk of missing our flight. Right now I'm debating between a 10pm flight or a 1:30pm flight for the middle of the week. It says the last time for picking up at the hotel is 5:50pm with an arrival at airport at 7pm. Would that be an accurate time or should I do an earlier departure time in case of traffic?
  • When do prices on tickets go up typically? Since I'm paying for a lot of different things I'm thinking of buying the tickets to the parks close to last, but I would like to get them before a price hike. Also is there any advantage of buying a package with room and tickets? Or should I just do these separately?
  • What's the weather like in California in the middle of February? In Florida it's usually hot with a few random cold spells. Is it the same in Cali or does it get colder there. Was wondering if we could use the pools and go on water rides or if it'll be too cold for those type of activities.

I can comment on the weather as I live here. February is usually cooler, in the 60s would be average. However it's not unheard of to have days in the 70s and last year was quite a bit colder than usual, with some days in the 50s. Last year we also got a ton of rain, but this was welcome as we had been experiencing a drought for 10 years prior due to very little rain. This year we got so much rain that the drought is officially over. I think outdoor swimming would be unlikely but you truly never know in Southern California! My son was born in January and it was in the 80s when we came home from the hospital!

I have not read each post but personally I would not even consider bus transportation from the airports around DLR. I would Uber/Taxi/Limo. Most of the hotels have recommended limo drivers which as you probably know are not limos but just a private driver. You should be fine with the 10PM flight (if you prefer that to get more time in Anaheim). I would probably arrange a pick up at 6PM if it was me which should be plenty of time.

IIR ticket prices usually increase in February. DLR sells tickets for certain calendar years. So if you bought a ticket now, for example, it would likely require first use by Dec 31, 2017 (with 14 days after that to use all the days on your ticket). I would wait to buy the ticket until January.

Here is some weather data that may help:

I bought some tickets directly from Disney about 3 weeks ago. They say they're valid until 01/13/2019 on them. :)

That's a bit chilly for water especially for a Florida girl like me lol. Do you know if they heat the pools?

I was thinking Uber might be really expensive to go from Disneyland to LAX since it's a much farther distance than the other airport we will be flying into. Getting to Disneyland I plan on taking Uber. Good to know February is when they usually increase prices so I can buy the tickets relatively close to then without worry.

That's good to know. This will be my first ticket that I'm not getting a resident discount it's weird not qualifying lol.

We used Uber to get to LAX last month from DLR (Hilton Anaheim). We paid a 1.3 surge rate because lots of folks were apparently leaving the D23 Expo at the same time. It cost about $50-55. The regular rate would be maybe $40.

Oh that's not so bad, I was thinking it was going to be around $100 since it's a far distance.

So I just bought my plane tickets yay! I'll be getting in at 2pm on Presidents day and will be flying out at 9pm that following Wednesday. So it's going to be a short trip, but I'm hoping to pack a lot of Disney time in. Do you think it's possible to get on most of the rides if I buy a three day park hopper ticket? I'm figuring we'll be at the hotel by 3pm and then can go into the park until close (hoping it'll be a somewhat later close time since it's a holiday) then go from open to close all day Tuesday and then open to about 4pm on Wednesday since our plane leaves out of LAX and we'll be driving in rush hour traffic want to give us extra time.

I'm think two sit down dinners (Blue Bayou and unsure of the other and potentially one character breakfast, the Minnie Plaza one only has characters for breakfast correct?) Since it'll be relatively cold I'm figuring we won't need to go back to the hotel to rest at all like we do in Florida during the hot summer months. I'm also leaning towards getting the Maxpass to maximize the fast passes we can get to get on more rides.

Hydroguy can correct me if things have changed, but one thing to be aware of with the Swan and Dolphin is that you can not use Magical Express to and from the airport. Magical Express is WDW's free service where not only do you have bus service to and from the airport, but once you check your bags at your home airport, they are delivered to your resort room. You do not have to pick them up at bag check at the Orlando airport. Also, coming home, you can check your bags onto your flight at the WDW resort hotel, so if you have your printed boarding pass, you can skip any lines at the airport and go straight to security. When we go to WDW, we never rent a car. The bus takes us to our resort- our bags magically appear in our resort so we do not have to lug them from the airport- and Disney transportation takes us everywhere else we need to go. Also, if you do rent a car, the Swan and Dolphin have a $20 daily parking fee, unlike the WDW owned resorts where parking is free at the resorts and the parks for registered resort guests (Yep- at DLR, they make resort guests pay for parking and at WDW, they do not). Also, at the Swan and Dolphin you do not get magic bands (you can use FP+, you just either have to buy a magic band or use the RFID ticket card they give you). I will say, as much as we hate FP+, we love the magic bands.

That said- the Swan and Dolphin are a fantastic location for non-Disney owned resorts. They are inside Disneyworld and I believe Disney still owns the land they sit on, just not the resorts. Again, unless things have changed I believe they do get to book FP+ at 60 days (other non WDW resorts are 30 days) and they do get access to the park extra hours. So, in my mind, they would be the next best thing to being in a WDW owned on property resort. We have not stayed there, but from everything we have heard, the Swan and Dolphin are clearly convention hotels and the inside theming does not feel like Disney at all and has no Disney theming, but obviously, the minute you step outside of its doors you are immersed in Disney as you are right there in the middle of three Disney owned resorts, on Disney property, and in walking distance of both EPCOT and DHS.

Coming from SNA, I think you can be there by 3, if your flight arrives at 2. We are usually at the resort within about an hour of landing, even with getting bags and picking up a rental car. So, it looks like basically you are just going to have one full day, and 2 part days? With just being 2 adults, and with hoppers, if you go at a fast speed you can get a lot done in that time. Not optimal- but you work with what you have. I found a calendar online that set out what the hours were presidents day week this past January and assuming it is right, it shows that on president's day DL was open from 8-11 and CA was open from 9-10. The Tues and Weds after president's day DL was open from 9-9 and CA from 9-8. Doesn't mean that it will be the same next year, but at least it gets you an idea. We love the Minnie's breakfast- it is great for characters.

Thanks! I'm hoping farther into the week the crowds won't be as bad. I'll focus on rides we don't have in Florida first. Do you know if Disneyland is the same with being able to book restaurants for length of hotel stay?

Disneyland Dining reservations are not linked to resort reservations or length of stay. You can make your dining reservations 60 days out, but you'll have to keep at it each day at the 60 day mark for each of the days you want reservations.

Thanks, since I'm not there very long it won't be too much of an issue to do each day. I noticed on the Disneyland website there isn't a MDE part, is this just because I haven't booked a hotel, dining and tickets yet, or will these not show up in my account to keep track of?
