Disney's Magical Express

If not flying with a participating carrier do you grab you bags yourself and then they load them "under" the bus? You wouldn't take your bags in the bus with you would you? I know that someone is rolling their eyes now because this may be a stupid questiond to some but work with me please!

Well, if it's a stupid question...then, count me as stupid with you!! I know the bus will have to store strollers beneath the bus...I am assuming they can store bags as well. But, if I was going, I would rather carry my own bags to the resort. I suspect that it might take a LONG time sometimes to get your bags to you. We were at BWV in early Dec. and left our bags and groceries with the bell staff while we waited for our room to be cleaned. It took over an hour for the bags to get delivered to our room...and, that was just getting them from the front door of the hotel to our room. I cannot imagine what that backlog might look like when Disney starts delivering LOTS of baggage to people's rooms. Here's hoping they add a lot more bellstaff!!

But, I think loading and unloading baggage onto the Mears shuttle buses would really slow down the boarding/deboarding times. I think if I "checked" my bags to WDW, and had to wait while others bags were loaded and unloaded...it might make me a little anxious. I originally thought the "express" bus meant no luggage, but I guess that is impossible. I just don't know how "express" the express buses will actually be.

Of course, maybe they will divide the buses up by resort, so that you are never going to more than one or two resorts...but, then you will have to wait for that bus to fill up, which could take a while.

I don't know...I'd like to be optimistic about this...I'm just having trouble doing that.

I'm with you. I just keep thinking that the bus will be very full so they would not want bags on the bus with the people. It would be a pain unloading the bags from under the bus for every hotel. Let's face it many of us fly carriers other then those participating so we will be bringing along our own luggage.

I hate to say it but I selfishly hope this drives prices down on rentals and towncar service. I think the direct route for us will be the best route. I can't imagine my husband sitting on a bus going from one resort to the other dropping people off and unloading bags!

A few questions:

What if you are not flying with one of the participating airlines but you do have reservations at a Disney resort, are you eligible for the shuttle?

If eligible for the complimentary shuttle how are your bags handled since you can't use the special check in? Do you take your bags on the shuttle?

Are you in vans or on a motor coach? If it's a bus and not the vans won't the Mears trip be even longer then the horror stories I have read about with people "paying" for their service in the past?

Do you think this will drive the cost down for the independent carriers such as Tiffany's?
Not sure how the non-participating luggage will go, but the participating luggage will be travelling in a seperate cargo van.

I have not heard anything about the use of vans, however, it does make sense that they would employ them. However, just because it's a coach doesn't mean that the bus will be filled with one couple from every resort on property.

This is my read on it:
ONLY those who are flying the participating airports can take advantage of this service (both luggage transfer and shuttle). It says Disney is working with other carriers to add to the list & as people take advantage of this and choose the participating airlines, you bet the other airlines will want to get on board.
My thought is that the luggage will not be on the coach, it will be driven separately like Chip-n-dale said in a cargo van. So the coach just drops off people rather quickly.
Really we'll only truly see how this works after 5/5/05!! I think it is a great idea if it works the way it sounds. We would definately take advantage of it & use the grocery service to stock up our DVC villa!

Hmm...but, didn't Disney say it would be available to ALL resort guests? This is VERY confusing. As usual, Disney press releases are "clear as mud". I know they try very hard...but, I usually find too many unanswered questions with any Disney press release.

Gosh...I sound like such a pessimist today!! Let me just say, "I LOVE WDW"!!!

Now, I feel better!!

Hope this helps out and from my understanding any inbound flight is included, but upon departure only the airlines listed will do the check in for the time being. This is a trial for the celebration period and depends on how successful it is, it will be continued. They state deluxe motorcoaches (themed) as those used for the Disney Cruise, so it will not be the shuttle but the bi buses and they do state that it will be 3 or 4 resorts, depending on number of passengers.

Disney’s Magical Express is a complimentary new airport transportation and luggage delivery service available to all Disney Resort* Guests that offers hassle free transportation between Orlando International Airport and the Walt Disney World Resort. The outbound portion of Disney’s Magical Express (from a Disney Resort to Orlando International Airport) offers Resort Guests complimentary return transportation from their hotel to Orlando International Airport. For those flying domestically on the following airlines -- American, Delta (including Song), Continental, and United (including Ted), Disney’s Magical Express also offers resort airline check-in that allows these Guests to check their luggage and receive their airline boarding passes at their Walt Disney World Resort. Guests are met by a costumed Disney representative upon arrival at the airport and directed to our Disney Welcome Center located on Level One A side of the airport.
Guests will board a themed motor coach to their Resort and experience an “edutainment” video.
The tagged luggage is retrieved behind the scenes and delivered separately to their Resort room.
For the resort departure, Guests will be notified of their motor coach pick up time the day prior to check-out.

Will Disney’s Magical Express continue on a complimentary basis after the “Happiest Celebration On Earth” has concluded?

Which Resorts are included?
All Walt Disney World Resort hotels other than the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin hotel, the hotels on or near Hotel Plaza Boulevard and Shades of Green. Will all Disney select wholesalers offer this service, or only the Walt Disney Travel Co.?
All Disney select wholesalers will be offered the opportunity to incorporate Disney’s Magical Express service into their Walt Disney World vacations portfolio.

Arriving From (originating city or connecting city into Orlando)
Destination (for departure)
Airline Carrier (arrival and departure)
Flight Number (arrival and departure)
and, if not a part of the original booking, provide the Disney resort reservation number.

What if a Travel Agent does not have the flight information at the time of booking?
The reservation can still be made; the Agent will be advised to return to disneytravelagents.com or call DRC to add the flight information later.

Can a Guest book transportation upon arrival at the airport?
No. Guests must book Disney’s Magical Express service reservation at least 10 days prior to arrival, so that they fully benefit from the service and a seamless luggage delivery to their Resort room.

Approximately 21 days prior to a Guest’s arrival, an Airport Transportation Booklet containing general information and luggage tags – to be attached prior to leaving home – will be mailed to the travel agency with the Guest’s name included, which the agency must deliver to their Guest. Special delivery arrangements will be made for those booking between the 10-day cut-off and the 21-day mailing timeframe.

Do international Guests have to claim luggage?
If Orlando is the Guest's first port of entry into the United States then the Guest claims their luggage after debarking the plane (luggage is not transferred to Baggage Claim at this point). The Guest proceeds through the Customs process with their luggage. When complete the luggage is given back to the airport to be transferred to Baggage Claim and Disney’s Magical Express service pulls the luggage on behalf of the Guest.

If Orlando is not the Guest's first port of entry into the United States then the Guest has already completed the Customs process and does not have to claim luggage.

Is the luggage pulled prior to Resort check-out?
No. However, the Guest may request Bell Services’ assistance with their luggage to the motor coach area, but it is not transferred separately as it is on the inbound service.

How many stops will the motor coach make between Orlando International Airport and the guest’s Disney Resort hotel?
Anywhere from three to four stops to drop off guests at various Disney resort hotels.

Will Disney’s Magical Express provide wheelchairs at the airport upon arrival?
No.

How does return transportation to the airport work?

With this service, Guests with late flight departures no longer have to worry about their luggage after they check-out of their Resort; they can simply check their luggage at the Resort Airline Check-in Desk and then enjoy their last day of their stay.

How will Guests know what time the motor coach leaves from their Resort to the airport?

Guests flying internationally can take advantage of the complimentary motor coach transportation, but will need to handle their own luggage and check-in with their airline at the Orlando International Airport.

Is there a limit to the number of bags a guest can check at their resort versus checking in directly at the airport?
The Resort Airline Check-in Desk will follow the same guidelines as the participating airlines.

What if the Guest misses their flight? Where will their luggage go?
If a Guest checks their luggage from their city of origin in time to make their originally scheduled flight, their bags are likely to make it to Orlando International Airport as scheduled, even if they miss their flight. Disney representatives will pull their bags and wait for the Guest’s arrival before forwarding them to their resort hotel.

Why are the hours of operation only 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Resort Airline Check In Desk?
The remote check-in that lets Guests check bags and obtain boarding passes is operational from 6 a.m. – 2 p.m., a timeframe that corresponds with the 11 am check out policy for Disney resort hotels.

Motor coaches offering return transportation to Orlando International Airport will pick up near these locations and will operate around the clock, seven days a week, based on flight schedules. Guests are notified about their departure times the day prior to check-out.

Are there certain hours of operation for the Disney Welcome Center at the airport?
The general hours of operation for the Disney Welcome Center at the Orlando International Airport will be 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., but those hours will be extended to meet all flights of all guests that have booked Disney’s Magical Express, even if their flight is scheduled to arrive after 11 p.m. The Welcome Center will also closely follow arrival information to be available for flights that may be delayed.

Hmm, based on this information, I think this service will be superior to the current Mears service. It states that guests MUST reserve this service at least 10 days out. This way, Disney will know when you are arriving, and where you are going. This will allow them to schedule the shuttles for maximum efficiency for the guests. With the current Mears, they never know who, when or where, so it's hit or miss for them.

It doesn't matter what airline you are using on the to-WDW leg of your trip, b/c the only thing that is happening w/ your luggage is that it is being loaded into a Disney cargo van from the bag room instead of being sent to the carousels. All of the airline-specific handling and marking is already finished by that point in time. This has been done for cruise lines for ages, the identity of the airline does not matter at all.

The reason that the identity of the airline matters on the return leg, when you are going home, is that the service is checking you in for your flight and sending your baggage into the bag room for you with the airline's tag on it. They have to have access to the airline's reservations and bag registration systems in order to do that. Giving them that access is a leap of faith on the airline's part, and there are quite a few reasons why the airline might not want to do so.

BTW, UK travellers who are visiting on Virgin Holidays package plans have been able to check in for their flights and check their luggage at Downtown Disney for years, though it was suspended for awhile after 9/11. I'd imagine that folks on the UK boards would be able to tell us whether or not it really gives you more playtime on your last day.

Untill everything is working I wouldn't rush into any definite conclusion as to how well it will go, but, for now, that is what I think:

With what I've seen from Mears, TSA, and the luggage people behind the scenes at each airline, I do not see it working tip top beggining to end. There will be problems, and I do not think they will be just a few.
But again, it is free (for now) as many will think, so why not... Right?
Well, if you never minded waiting for a bus/motor coach to fill up (not vans as the regular Mears shuttle), having other people handling your luggage (and maybe taking a little longer than you to arrive at your resort), leaving earlier than necessary back to the airport (they might say it will save you time, but....),and, and, and, than this will be just a great new feature Disney has to offer you.

If you still want the one on one private service, a free grocery stop, your luggage by your side at all times, no lines to wait at both ends (THERE WILL BE LINES at the "courtesy/welcome" Disney desk as there has always been lines at the Mears shuttle desk - just imagine the volume Disney Express will create (it is free after all)), a luxury vehicle with your private chauffeur, than please stick with your favorite transportation company...

To be honest with all of you. I DO worry a lot with what Disney/Mears/Bags and etc are doing, not only for my sake, but for the sake of 1000's of people working in transportation in Orlando, all owner operators, all companies like ours, rental car companies, hotels outside the Disney area, Universal Studios, taxi cab companies, shuttle services, restaurants outside Disney and etc, etc, etc... It might be hard for anyone to realize it now, but with the Disney packages, free transportation and all, Disney wants to hold every Orlando traveler inside their doors, no way out untill the end of your vacation. That might sound what business is all about, but with Orlando's (and America's) economy just coming back to normal, we, the small business owners will get hurt with that "monopoly" game they are playing.

I do rely on Disney (not 100% but I do) for my business to flourish, but I also can not sit and relax with so much control they are having in the orlando area. I know, if it weren't for Disney, Orlando wouldn't exist (as they say). Well, maybe it is true, but that was over 30 years ago. Now our economy, and the families within, need to get back on their feet after such a long wait after Sept 11th 2001, and the hurricanes in 2004. 1 1/2 years of free shuttle will create a big, big mess in the Orlando area. A few month free trial would be fine by me, untill they get their act together, but 1 1/2 years, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

Again, I'm a Disney fan since before I even came to live in Orlando, and still am a fan. That has nothing to do with what I feel is an unfair business practice done by a huge group of powerful people (not only Disney, but Mears and etc...)

Regards,

Gregory Nicolas.

We will be giving it a shot in June. The way I figure it, if you have to make your reservation ahead of time, they are going to be able to put all the folks going to BWV, YC/BC together on one bus. Those going to POR/FQ/OKW on another and so on. I don't think there will be such a wait time as before with Mears. The info says 3-4 stops at most. We'll have to wait and see how it goes in May.

I apologize in advance for not understanding, I still don’t know how the baggage will be handled for those of us who do not fly using a participating carrier. Do we have to walk over the carousel, grab our bags and take them to the Mears motor coach where we then load them on the bus? Do we grab our bags and take them to the Mears cargo van where they are then loaded. I know we can’t check our bags at the Disney resort so how would the return trip be handled. If no one really knows the answer can someone advise who/where I can go to get the answers?

Speaking as someone who travels with Virgin from the UK, yes being able to check-in at DTD on the last day does add another day to the holiday. As the Virgin flights don't leave until evening, if the bags are checked in by 9am and we don't need to be at the airport until an hour prior to take off, we can sometimes stay at WDW until 5pm - quite an advantage.

It remains to be seen if this new scheme will run smoothly. I do foresee queues on arrival, but then there are lots of queues at WDW aren't there??!!!!

Disney has been doing this for years with DCL. I haven't heard any reports of huge waits at MCO,or lost luggage. I have read any reports of guest having to ride all over WDW before getting to their resort. Since the service works so well for DCL, it makes sense for them to expand it.

The grocery stop isn't an issue for us. We can always order our groceries with We Go Shop. They will shop at the store of our choice and deliver to our resort for a small fee.

http://www.wegoshop.com/

"While the inbound domestic airlines are not restricted, as of now the outbound pre-flight check in at the resort is limited to guests flying on American, Delta, Song, Continental, United or Ted."

Help me out here, does this mean that even if we are flying in on airline that is not a participant we will be given the special handling tags and our bags will be picked up my Mears and transported to the resort by their cargo van? How do we handle our bags on the return trip?

Remember that DCL has a very small % of Disney's clients. Magical Express will have to handled thousands of people plus all their luggage. I hardly can see all working as well as they are promising 4 month prior to the beggining of the new operation.

Yes, you will be given baggage tags so your bags can be picked up by the baggage handling service and transported to the resort in their cargo van.

For the return trip, you will have to take your bags with you to the airport (in the cargo hold of the bus), retrieve them when you get off the bus at the airport, and check them in when you get your boarding passes. This is essentially the same thing you would do now if you were using Mears or a town car service.

Ralph,

Thanks so much for your reply. I could not find any detailed information about how this would be handled. Now we have transportation options to consider, do we pay $100.00 for a direct transfer to and from the resort with a grocery stop or do we use Magic Express free of charge, use one of the grocery shopping services for $20.00 to $30.00 dollars and be a little (hopefully) inconvenienced by stopping at a few resorts to drop off guests.

Thanks again for the information :flower1:

I don't know if everyone saw this, but I did read that there will only be 3-4 resort stops per bus. I'm just wondering how long you will have to wait before your bus leaves.

That will depend on the anticipated arrivals. Because of the reservations, Disney will know the arrival time information for the people, as well as where they are going. This will allow for best scheduling. For example, if they know that no one will be arriving for Zone 2 for another hour, they know they can let the Zone 2 bus depart right away.

I will give it a try. Won't be using the return resort check in option since I will be flying Spirit Airlines out of Chicago, but I figured it might be worth it to try it once. If it takes 3 hours (which I doubt since I am staying onsite) then I know not to use it next time.
