Associated Press - April 17, 2008 8:45 PM ET
LAS VEGAS (AP) - The U.S. Senate has approved $45 million in funding for a proposed levitating train linking Southern California to Las Vegas.
The bill passed Thursday is the largest cash infusion in the project's nearly 20-year history. The money will be used to fund environmental studies for the first leg of the project.
The train would use magnetic levitation technology to carry carry passengers from Disneyland to Las Vegas in well under two hours, traveling at speeds of up to 300 mph. It would be the first Maglev system in the U.S.
Cost estimates have reached $12 billion.
U.S. Sen. Harry Reid says the train is needed to ease traffic congestion on Interstate 15. Critics call the project wasteful spending.
The Senate bill also allocates up to $6 million for restoration and protection of the Lake Tahoe basin; $2 million for the Southern Regional Transportation Commission; and $2 million for the Ely, Nev. railroad.
The measure now moves to President Bush for approval.
