Could someone please tell me if these are efficient modes of transportation or just rides themselves? Is it easier to walk from end to end of the parks or can these be used to save some steps/time.TIA:)

The monorail is only helpful in getting to Downtown Disney. But we do use the railroad to get around the park, especially when the kids are getting tired, it gives them a nice break. We usually use it to get between Main St & Toontown or between TomorrowLand and New Orlean Square.

On our first day each trip, we take the train around the whole park, starting in Main St. it's a tradition.

The monorail can be helpful if you're in Tomorrowland and want to get to Downtown Disney, the DL hotel, or Paradise Pier. If you're not in Tomorrowland, it's probably quicker to go through the main gates. The Railroad can definitely help save time, but it's also a fun attraction to go on during the afternoon when lines are long and kids may be tired.

The railroad is really handy during parade times as it helps you manuever through the park without dealing with the crowds. We usually watch the fireworks by Its a Small World and then my father in law takes the train back to the main entrance to leave the park. Its also a fun ride!

We have visited DL every spring for the past 4 years, use the train to get around sometimes and thought it was a fun experience........

We went one year in the fall..

they were doing a refurb downtime of the train..

within two days I had a blister on my foot (first time that ever happened on our DL trips!) .

We have now decided that the train and monorail are an important piece to our DL vacation. We were going to go in March until I found out the train will be down for a refurb.. changed it to May! (And now might not go as a family until 2006 as we are moving this spring.)

As Amy&Dan stated, its a great tool for manuevering around the parades. Both the fireworks and the parades can clog up the walkways and make Main Street a dead end. If we are ready to leave the park under one of these circumstances, we head to the nearest train station.

And as others have mentioned, its a nice ride, too.
