Disneyland Monorail question

Before I start, I did search the thread but did not find what I was looking for.

What is the relation between tickets and the monorail? Do you have to have a ticket to ride the monorail? The reason I ask is because we are going to DL for spring break and will arrive at the GC before the check in time. I thought it would be a good idea to ride the monorail while we wait for check in time. And since I will be driving all day I'm going to be too tired to go into the park the same day we arrive so i thought it would be cool to check out the park and resort before we actually go in. My worry is, we are staying 8 nights and have 6-day park hoppers and if I would have to "use up" one day from the park hoppers to ride the monorail then it would be pointless to use it just for the monorail.

Can someone explain how the monorail system works in this respect? Thanks

You must have a park ticket to ride the monorail. They collect your ticket before you enter the station. (This makes sense, since the other stop is smack in the middle of Tomorrowland!)

I figured this, will it use up one day? or do they just need proof that you have a ticket?

FYI, you can check in at any time. We checked in at 6am once to PPH. Our room wasn't ready until 5 (special circumstances of being upgraded to a suite), but we were luggage free with car parked from 6am!

So get there, check in. They'll give you your packet, your cardkeys, etc. Then you can perhaps grab your swimsuits from your bags, put your packet into your luggage, get whatever else you might need, then put your bags with Bell Services!

Go to the changing area (just don't ask me where that might be, though I *think* at the Grand it's likely in the workout/spa area?), then go swimming! Lounge in the sun. Grab some food at WhiteWater Snacks. Do some shopping. :)

They'll text you, I believe, to let you know when your room is ready (and what room it is? can't remember all of a sudden) and you can make your way back! Either stop in at Bell Services to pick luggage up, or call them when you're in your room.

Good idea, we were planning on swimming the first day. Good way to pass the time while the room gets ready.

It's true, no matter what time you actually get your room there is TONS to do right where you'll be!

The lobby alone is so relaxing, walk downtown disney and do some window shopping, tons of resturants either at the grand or dtd, the spa at the grand has a workout room, changing rooms, massages and the pools and spa are RIGHT there as is white water snacks. The lounge chairs by the pool are so comfy too!!

We were just there last Feb and it's like a home away from home!!

Love the swimming idea!

Also, after the drive, you might be ready to cruise Downtown Disney too! I love to walk around, people watch, and shop too!!!! You can easily take a long time down there! You could even go and see the new Alice in Wonderland movie DDD!!!! So cool to be able to say you saw it at Disney :)!!! I saw Pirates there when it first came out and we always talk about how we went and saw it and then rode POTC!!!!

We were planning on goin down DTD while we waited. The monorail was just an idea. I haven't been to DTD since about 5-6 years ago, is there anything that they changed/added since then? Judging by the pics of the hotel great hall, we'll probably spend a good chunk there soaking in that we are finally there. :goodvibes

What is the theater like? That sounds like a good idea, we are considering it depending on how much extra time we have before our room is ready.
